The good version of this day gets planned backwards.
A friend is in for one day and you are the host. Most guides to things to do in Ann Arbor on a weekend hand you forty options and leave you sorting it out on a sidewalk at 2pm.
This is one sequence instead. Where to start, what happens in the middle, where you end up.
Fair warning about the shape of it: this day leans late. Ann Arbor’s best rooms are theatres, small music halls and bars, and the town genuinely is better at 9pm than it is at noon.
So build the evening first and let the afternoon fill in behind it.
Step one, days ahead: find out what is on
The only real homework is checking calendars. Every room below runs a programme that changes night to night, so there is no such thing as “we’ll just drop in and see.”
Look at these four, pick one, and buy the tickets before your friend arrives.
The State Theatre at 233 S State St is the one most visitors recognise from the outside. It sits right in the middle of the campus-side blocks, so a show there anchors your whole evening east of Main.
The Power Center for the Performing Arts at 121 Fletcher St is the big-stage option, up on the north edge of campus. This is where you go when your friend’s thing is dance, touring theatre, or something with an orchestra in the pit.
Rackham Auditorium at 915 E Washington St is two minutes from the Power Center and a completely different room. Smaller, older, better for anything you would actually want to hear rather than watch.
Kerrytown Concert House at 415 N 4th Ave is the wildcard. It is a house, on a residential-feeling block north of downtown, and the scale of it is the whole appeal.
If a visitor tells you they like jazz, check this one first and check it early. Small rooms sell out quietly.
Late morning: park once and start north
The single best thing you can do for a visitor’s opinion of this town is to never move the car again after you arrive.
Downtown is walkable end to end. The moment you start re-parking between stops, a good day turns into a series of errands and your friend spends the afternoon watching you hunt for a space.
Leave it on the north side and start in Kerrytown, which is where Kerrytown Concert House sits anyway. Coffee, a wander, nothing that requires a decision.

Mid-afternoon: drift south, do not narrate
From Kerrytown you walk south down Fourth Ave into the Main Street blocks. It is maybe fifteen minutes if you do not stop, and you should stop.
The mistake hosts make is turning this walk into a tour. Nobody has ever been won over by a fact about a facade.
Let them go into whatever they want to go into. Four blocks in an hour is the correct pace, and it puts you on Liberty at exactly the right time.
Around five: sit down before the day tips
Old Town Tavern at 122 W Liberty St is where this day changes gear. It is an old, unfussy, wood-and-noise sort of bar, the kind of room where you can hear each other and nobody is performing.
This is the stop people remember, which is annoying if you spent a week planning the rest of it. Sit longer than you meant to.
Worth knowing that it also books live music some nights, so glance at what is scheduled before you decide how long you are staying.
Golden hour: one drink on Main
The Ravens Club at 207 S Main St is two blocks from Old Town and a deliberate change of register. Darker, more considered, the drinks list treated as a project.
Have one here, not three. This is a staging post, not the destination, and you have a curtain to make.
From Main, the walk east to State St runs about ten minutes. Leave with more time than you need so the walk itself is part of the evening rather than a jog.
Plan B, and it is a good plan B
Some nights nothing is on that suits. It happens, especially between semesters when the campus rooms go quiet.
The Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase at 212 S 4th Ave covers you. It is a proper basement comedy club, one block off Main, and the lineup turns over constantly.
Check who is on before you commit. A visiting headliner and an open-mic night are two very different evenings, and both are listed.
Last stop: the one that ends it properly
The Last Word at 301 W Huron St is the nightcap, and it is the only stop where the walk is part of the point.
Whatever you were doing, you are heading back northwest across downtown to get there, fifteen minutes or so through blocks that are better at night than they have any business being.
It is a cocktail bar of the quiet, low-ceilinged sort. Two people can finish a conversation in there. That is the correct last impression of a town.
The rivalry thing, handled
If your friend drove in from another Michigan college town, they will say something about it before you reach the second block.
Let them have it. Agree, even. A day that has been sequenced properly makes its own case, and the host who argues has already lost.
The rule almost everyone breaks
Three real stops plus a show is a full day. Do not schedule a fourth.
The instinct when you are proud of where you live is to cram, and it backfires every time. Your friend leaves having half-seen five things and remembers none of them.
Cut the last item. Let the conversation be the thing they actually came for.
