What to Do in Ann Arbor on Move-In Weekend

The boxes are up three flights and nobody has eaten. The mini fridge is still in its carton, the mattress pad is in the trunk under a laundry hamper, and it is the middle of a hot Saturday afternoon in a town you do not know yet.

This is the part of Ann Arbor move-in weekend that nobody plans for. So here is the plan: eight places within a short walk of campus that will take a walk-in, feed a tired family fast, and not ask anyone to move the car again.

University of Michigan early move-in runs Saturday 22 August through Tuesday 25 August 2026, and classes start Monday 31 August. Everyone in your stairwell is working from the same schedule and will get hungry at the same moment you do.

Three things worth knowing before you go anywhere

Walk if you can. Parking near the residence halls is the worst it gets all year, and the spot you fought for on Saturday morning is worth more than the four blocks you would save. Everything below is inside a kilometre of the Diag.

Assume no reservation. Move-in weekend is not the night to build a plan around a booking. The list below is deliberately counter-service and walk-in first, sit-down second.

Order for the room, not just the table. The student will be hungry again at eleven when you are back at the hotel. Two extra slices in a box solves a problem you cannot solve remotely.

When you need food in twenty minutes

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, 1116 S University Ave

The pragmatic answer, and there is no shame in it. It sits right on the South University block, a few minutes from the Hill dorms and East Quad, so you can leave a half-built room and be eating before the sweat dries.

One thing on the menu, done fast, ordered at a counter by whoever still has the energy to stand up. It has its own lot, which is genuinely rare on that block, and it runs late enough to cover the second dinner nobody admits to wanting. See the listing or scan the menu in the car.

Joe’s Pizza NYC, 1107 S University Ave

Directly across the street, and the cheapest way to feed four people covered in cardboard dust. Slices, sold by the slice, thin enough to fold and eat standing on the sidewalk.

No reservations, no host stand, no waiting for a table to turn. Take a whole pie back to the room if the room is where everyone would rather be, and put the box on top of the fridge that is not plugged in yet. Listing here, and the menu is short enough to decide on the walk over.

When somebody needs to sit down and stop moving

Slurping Turtle, 608 E Liberty St

The closest real sit-down meal to the Diag on this whole list, about a three-minute walk. Japanese, ramen-forward, industrial room with long communal tables, which is the reason it works today: a group of six who did not book still fits somewhere.

It does take reservations, but walk-ins on a move-in Saturday are the normal way in, and the tables turn. Order the ramen even in August. Nobody has ever regretted a bowl of broth after a day of stairs. Slurping Turtle listing.

Grizzly Peak Brewing Company, 120 W Washington St

Ten minutes down Liberty into downtown, and the correct answer when the parents have stopped pretending and would like a beer, a burger, and a chair with a back on it. Stone walls, brewpub menu, big enough to absorb a family that shows up unannounced.

There is a patio, there is paid garage parking on Washington if the car has to come along, and dogs are welcome outside. They even publish a patio menu for dogs, which tells you the tone of the place. Grizzly Peak listing.

Coffee, which is what half of you actually want

Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea, 123 W Washington St

Opens early and stays open late, both of which matter this weekend. Early because Sunday starts before your student does, late because the last trip of the day usually ends with somebody needing twenty quiet minutes.

It is a local chain and this is the downtown branch, with sidewalk seating on Washington. Good place to sit with a to-do list and cross things off it. Sweetwaters listing, and the menu if the order needs settling in advance.

Cupsnchai, 214 S 4th Ave

Chai done properly, plus a food menu, on Fourth Avenue at the Kerrytown end of downtown. It runs later than most cafes, so it doubles as the place to sit when the dorm room is finished and nobody wants to say goodnight yet.

It is also the single most useful address to point a new student toward. Somewhere to meet people that is not a bar and not a dining hall is worth more in week one than any restaurant on this page. Cupsnchai listing, menu here.

The Common Cup, 1511 Washtenaw Ave

Up on Washtenaw, walkable from the Hill dorms, which makes it the coffee stop that does not require going downtown at all. Non-profit cafe, serious about the coffee, with its own parking, which on this weekend counts as a feature.

It is not open every day of the week, so check before you make the walk. If coffee turns out to be the thing that saves this weekend, we have a whole guide to the best coffee shops in Ann Arbor. The Common Cup listing.

Sunday morning, before you drive home

The Hen Ann Arbor, 403 E Washington St

The last meal is the one that matters, and it is almost always breakfast. The Hen is a daytime kitchen on East Washington, breakfast and lunch only, walkable from most of central campus and from the downtown hotels.

No reservations, so put your name in and let everyone stand outside for a bit. It is a better goodbye than a hotel lobby waffle iron, and it gives your student a place they now know how to find on their own. The Hen listing and the menu.

What else to do with the hours in between

Not much, honestly, and that is the right call. Move-in day is a logistics day, and the win is getting the room done and the family fed without anyone crying in a parking structure.

If you have a free hour, walk your student from their building to the Diag and back so they can do it alone in the dark on Monday. Find the nearest coffee, the nearest late food, and the nearest place to sit outside. That is the whole orientation that matters on day one.

Save the real dinner for Sunday, when the room is done and everyone has showered. That meal has its own guide: where to eat with your parents on move-in weekend covers the downtown, sit-down, they-are-paying version of this list.

For everything else on and around campus, start at our eat and drink section. Hours and days do shift at the start of term, so a quick check before you walk over is never wasted.
