The last dinner before they drive home matters most.
University of Michigan early move-in runs Saturday 22 through Tuesday 25 August 2026, and every one of those days ends the same way. Boxes are up, the bed is made badly, and somebody says “so where should we eat?” while nobody wants to be the one who decides.
This is the sit-down meal, not the move-in-day meal. What follows is the restaurants Ann Arbor parents weekend runs on: a table, a server, a check your dad picks up, and forty-five minutes where everyone pretends they are not about to say goodbye.
What this meal is actually for
Your parents want two things they will not say out loud. They want somewhere that feels like a restaurant rather than a counter with a number on a stick, and they want to drive home believing you will be fed.
So: table service, real plates, a room they can hear each other in. Nothing that requires a jacket. Change out of the moving shirt and that is dressed up enough.
Below are three options, gentlest on the wallet first, so you can pick one before anybody has to ask what things cost. Where we have a link to the restaurant’s own menu, it is in the text – open it in the car and let them look at the prices in private.
The one where nobody has to perform
This is the Broadway strip, two minutes north of downtown across the river, on the way to and from North Campus and the medical campus. Street parking here is a real thing, which after a day of circling a parking structure feels like a gift.
Miny’s Mexican Restaurant at 1141 Broadway Street is the version of this meal where nobody has to perform. Family-run, table service, the kind of room where a server checks on you twice without hovering. Order like you mean it and the bill still lands gently.
It is a good call for the parents who have been carrying a mini fridge up three flights and want to sit down more than they want to be impressed.
Two doors up, Madras Masala Express at 1143 Broadway Street is the South Indian option, and it is the one to pick if your family has a vegetarian in it and you are tired of that being a whole conversation. Their menu is online, so you can settle the argument before you park.
Worth knowing: this one is a strong Sunday choice, since a lot of downtown thins out on the last night of a move-in weekend.
The one that reads as an occasion
Plate Sushi & Chicken at 1133 Broadway Street sits at the end of that same block and does the useful trick of reading as an occasion without a special-occasion bill.
Sushi does something to parents. It signals you have landed somewhere with options, somewhere adult, somewhere that is not a dining hall. And because the other half of the menu is fried chicken, a younger sibling who does not eat raw fish is not a problem to be solved.
Check the menu first. Rolls and a couple of shared plates is where the value is, and it lets the table order together instead of everyone retreating into their own entree.
This is also the bracket where a reservation, or at least a call ahead, starts to matter. Move-in week puts several thousand extra families into a town with a normal number of tables.
The one worth a collared shirt
Heidelberg Restaurant & Bar at 215 N Main Street is the downtown one. It has been part of Main Street for decades, it is German, and it is the only place on this list where a collared shirt is not overkill.
The room does the emotional work for you. Dark wood, a proper bar, the low noise of a restaurant that fills up rather than turns over. Your mother will take a picture of the table. Your father will read the whole beer list and then order what he was always going to order.
Their food menu is online, which is the polite way to let everyone see prices before you walk in. It leans evening, so check the listing for hours the morning of rather than assuming.
Park at the Ann Ashley structure on West Ann Street, one block off Main. It is the closest covered parking to that end of the street and it saves you the loop your dad will otherwise insist on driving three times.
Then walk somewhere for dessert
Do not skip this part. The walk is where the actual conversation happens, and it beats sitting in the restaurant ordering more coffee.
From Main Street it is about five minutes on foot to Blank Slate Creamery at 300 W Liberty Street, where the ice cream is made in-house in small batches. Get a cone, not a cup. Cones travel.
If you want the longer version, keep going toward the Old West Side and hit Washtenaw Dairy at 602 S Ashley Street. It is a counter, not a restaurant, and it has been an Ann Arbor institution long enough that half the people in line grew up in it. Donuts in the morning, cones the rest of the day.
Standing on the corner at Ashley and Madison eating ice cream with your parents is a better last memory than a dessert menu. It is also free of the check-arriving awkwardness.
The goodbye coffee, the morning they leave
The real last meal is usually a coffee in a paper cup, and the smart move is to pick one on their way out of town so nobody has to backtrack.
Heading south toward I-94 on the Ann Arbor-Saline side, The Drip House Coffee at 1336 S Main Street is the one. Easy parking, quick in and out, and close enough to the stadium that you will use it again on a football Saturday.
If they are pointed east toward US-23, Black Diesel Coffee at 1423 E Stadium Boulevard does the same job from the other side of town. Their menu is posted if anyone is particular about what they drink.
Hand them a cup, hug them in a parking lot, and go back to your room. That is the format. It has worked for a hundred years.
When they come back
