Ann Arbor’s dog patios run on a legal clock.
Every list of dog-friendly restaurants in Ann Arbor is a list of patios. That is the correct answer in July. It is close to useless in January, and the reason is not just the weather – it is written into the food code. Here is the part that actually decides your afternoon, along with hours for eighteen places, verified on 23 October 2026.
First, the rule that nobody puts in the listicle
Michigan has not legalized dogs on restaurant patios.
The state operates under the 2009 Michigan Modified Food Code, and the Livingston County Health Department’s published guidance states it plainly: the code “does not allow for dogs on patios.” Section 6-501.115 restricts animals in businesses that sell, prepare, or serve food. The one exception written into that section is for service animals controlled by a person with a disability, which lines up with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy animals are not service animals under the ADA.
So how does any patio in this town have dogs on it? A variance. An individual restaurant can ask its county health department for permission to go outside the state code and apply the newer 2022 FDA Food Code instead, which lets local jurisdictions allow dogs on patios. That 2022 code, as the Livingston guidance notes, “has not been adopted by the State of Michigan.” It is a restaurant-by-restaurant, county-by-county piece of paperwork, with a fee, new written procedures, and an inspection history that gets taken into account.
A bill to replace all of that with a simple opt-in has been working through Lansing. Senate Bill 200, introduced in March 2025 by Senator Sam Singh, would let you bring a leashed, non-service dog into an outdoor dining area if the restaurant notifies its local health department in writing 30 days ahead. It was reported out of committee in December 2025 and placed on the Senate’s order of third reading in May 2026. As of this writing it has not become law.
What this means for you, practically: a dog welcome is a policy each business sets and can change, not a blanket right you can assume. Washtenaw County does not publish a public list of which restaurants hold a variance, so neither can we. The Ann Arbor Observer reported in April 2019 that fewer than five local restaurants had one on file, and we could not find a newer count. That is exactly why the venues below are sorted by what each one says about dogs in its own words – that is the only signal worth anything.
The October mechanism: a winterized patio is an indoor patio
This is the thing worth knowing, and it is the reason a dog-friendly list has an expiration date.
The variance application that Michigan health departments use for dogs in outdoor dining areas requires a contingency plan for inclement weather or seasonal enclosure, and it draws a bright line: an outdoor dining area with a roof and more than one wall is considered an indoor area.
Read that again next to what Ann Arbor restaurants actually do in November. They put up the structures. Around town these get described by their own operators as greenhouses, igloos, domes, chalets, and heated tents. Black Pearl lists “Outdoor Heated Greenhouse Dining” among its services right on its own site.
Those structures are what make winter patio dining pleasant, and they are also what takes the patio out of the “outdoor” category. The thing that makes the cold survivable for you is the thing that makes it indoors for your dog.
The practical upshot: do not assume a patio that worked in September still works in December just because it is heated and open. If it has a roof and walls, assume it counts as inside and ask first.
The places that say it themselves
These two publish a dog welcome in their own voice. That is the strongest version of this that exists.
Grizzly Peak Brewing Company
Grizzly Peak built a program around it. The heading on its own site reads “Pups welcome on the Patio” with an asterisk, and the asterisk resolves to “Weather Permitting” – the venue stating the seasonal limit itself, which is more honesty than most aggregators manage.
The Pups on the Patio menu is real and current, with a 2026 edition, and items arrive in a complimentary Grizzly Peak dog dish. The brewery states that a portion of proceeds from each pup meal sold is donated to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. The human side is a solid downtown brewpub lunch, and the patio wraps the corner of Washington and Ashley, which is good people-watching and, depending on your dog, good squirrel-watching.
One note for accuracy: Grizzly Peak’s site posts two hours blocks that disagree with each other about Thursday, one saying 10pm and one saying 11pm. The schedule below is the overlap both blocks agree on. Call 734-741-7325 if a late Thursday matters.

Erratic Ale Co.
Worth the drive to Dexter, and the clearest invitation in the county. The brewery’s own site introduces J, the house brew dog who sits with the owner during home brewing, and then says it outright: “Please feel free to sit outside with your brew dog while enjoying a beer or two.”
It is also the most useful kind of place on a cold morning, because it opens at 7am as a coffee shop with a barista on staff until 4pm, then carries on as a taproom. No alcohol until noon on Sunday. Closed Mondays.

The clock, made visible
Bill’s Beer Garden
If you want one piece of evidence that dog patio season is a real calendar and not a vibe, it is Bill’s hours page.
Bill’s is outdoor by definition – a beer garden behind the Ashley Street block, no indoor room to retreat into. Its own site opens with “Our hours change with the seasons. We sometimes close for bad weather,” and then prints a season-by-season table: March-April, May-June, July-September, October.
And then the table stops. There is no November row. There is no December row. The schedule of Ann Arbor’s most purely outdoor drinking spot simply ends with October, which is the honest shape of this entire topic rendered as a timetable.
Right now it is open and it is good. Go this week.

Brewery patios and beer gardens
Breweries are the strongest category here, partly because beer gardens are built as outdoor rooms and partly because the culture leans that way.
HOMES Brewery
HOMES is dog-friendly enough to run a whole Instagram account for its canine regulars. Leashed and attended dogs are welcome in the beer garden at the Jackson Ave flagship. The beer list rotates hard toward hazy IPAs and collaboration sours, and the food is built to share.
There are two HOMES rooms and they keep different hours, which trips people up. The Jackson Ave brewpub is the one with the beer garden; the Campus taproom at 112 Jackson Plaza is a separate operation with its own schedule.

Jolly Pumpkin Cafe & Brewery
The Main Street sidewalk patio takes dogs, with shade, water bowls, and staff who are relaxed about it. Jolly Pumpkin is one of the original American sour breweries and La Roja is still the order; the wood-fired pizza holds up against a tart beer.
Main Street foot traffic is constant, which is either entertainment or overstimulation depending on your dog. A corner table is the move for a reactive pup. Note this is the downtown Main Street location, not Kerrytown.

Mothfire Brewing Co.
Pup friendly, on the Ellsworth light-industrial strip that has quietly turned into a good evening destination. Tacos and wood-fired pizza alongside the beer, and a crowd that skews neighborhood rather than campus. Opens at 4pm on weekdays, noon on weekends.

Salt Springs Brewery
The Saline option, in a converted stained-glass church that is worth seeing on its own. Closed Mondays, and the kitchen is a genuine kitchen rather than a snack counter – weekend brunch runs 11:30am to 2:45pm.

A few more brewery patios with on-site listings, worth a call before you drive out with a dog in the car: Arbor Brewing’s Session Room on Jackson Rd, the Corner Brewery on Norris St in Ypsilanti, and 734 Brewing in Depot Town. We did not re-verify their hours today, so treat those three as leads rather than plans.
Year-round, because you are not sitting in an enclosure
This is the category that survives November, and it is the real answer to “where can I take my dog in the cold.” None of these depend on a seated patio.
Argus Farm Stop
Two Argus locations, both with on-site listings, both open 8am daily, and both built around a walk-in-walk-out rhythm that works with a dog on a leash and a coffee in your hand. The Liberty store on the Old West Side is the full shopping run – local produce, bread, cheese, beer and wine, and a coffee bar. The Packard cafe is more tavern-adjacent and stays open latest of the group.
Grab a coffee, walk the dog, come back. That pattern does not care what month it is.

Washtenaw Dairy
The best cold-weather dog stop in Ann Arbor, and it is not close. Washtenaw Dairy opens at 5am on weekdays, which no other place on this page comes near, and the whole transaction happens at a window. You stand outside with your dog, you get a cake donut and a coffee or a cone, nobody has to make a policy decision about it.
The cake donuts do sell out in the morning. Standing on that corner on a winter morning with a dog and a donut is a genuine Ann Arbor institution.

Blank Slate Creamery
Liberty Street ice cream, made in house, and an order-and-step-outside setup that works with a dog waiting at the door. Opens at 2pm most days, noon on Saturdays. One date to put in your phone: Blank Slate closes from 22 December through 5 January, so it is not a holiday-week plan.

Biercamp
A small-batch meat shop and sandwich counter that cures and smokes its own, with a few picnic tables outside and a vibe as casual as it gets. The bratwurst is among the best in Washtenaw County and your dog will have opinions about it.
Worth correcting a thing that circulates about Biercamp, including in an earlier version of this guide: it is at 1643 S State St, not on Jackson Ave. Closed Mondays.

Patio restaurants for the warm half of the year
These are good calls from roughly April to October, and the ones to call ahead about once the structures go up.
Sava’s
The State Street patio sits across from campus, so the foot traffic keeps a curious dog busy. Wide menu, big weekend brunch, and a 9am open seven days a week that makes it one of the earlier sit-down options downtown. Pairs naturally with a Diag walk.

Frita Batidos
One of the most dog-populated sidewalks in town when the weather holds. Cuban-inspired fritas with shoestring fries on top, tropical batidos, and food that comes out fast, which suits a dog’s patience. The outdoor footprint is noticeably bigger in the warm months when Washington Street is closed to cars, so the patio you remember from summer is not the patio you get in December.

Black Pearl
Seafood, a raw bar, and the fish tacos that made the reputation. Black Pearl is also the clearest local illustration of the enclosure rule above, because it describes its own winter setup as Outdoor Heated Greenhouse Dining. Lovely for you in February; ask about the dog before you count on it.
Note the kitchen runs on split shifts – lunch only Wednesday through Sunday, then a dinner service, with bar service ending an hour after the kitchen.

Zingerman’s Roadhouse
The Jackson Ave Roadhouse has a lawn patio area that is more forgiving than a packed sidewalk, which makes it a good choice for a dog that needs physical space. Really Good American Food is the tagline and they back it. An 8am weekday open means breakfast is on the table too.

Zingerman’s Delicatessen
The Deli’s patio takes dogs and keeps a hose and bowls out so they can get a drink. Order inside, take a number, sit out back on the Kerrytown side away from the counter crush. The Reuben is the classic; sandwiches are enormous and priced for it.
The hours surprise people, so note them: the Deli now runs 11am to 7pm, every day, full stop.

What we could not pin down
Worth saying out loud, because the honest gaps are part of the answer.
Which venues hold a variance. Washtenaw County publishes no list, and its food licensing pages carry nothing on dogs in outdoor dining. The only count we found is the Observer’s April 2019 “fewer than five,” which is seven years old and we are not treating it as current.
Grizzly Peak’s Thursday close. The venue’s own site contradicts itself, 10pm in one block and 11pm in another. We published the overlap.
Three brewery patios. Session Room, Corner Brewery, and 734 Brewing are linked above without hours, because we did not verify them today.
Whether reusable bowls are allowed. The variance policy requires that food and water for pets be served only in single-use disposable containers. Several places here put out a reusable dish or a hose and bowl. We have no way to know which venues operate under a variance and which set their own house policy, so we are not drawing conclusions about any of them. Bring a collapsible travel bowl and the question never comes up.
How to actually navigate this
Call ahead, and call this week. This is the one topic where a six-month-old recommendation is genuinely unreliable, because the policy, the structures, and the weather all move.
Closed days to know: Erratic Ale, Biercamp, and Salt Springs are closed Mondays. Black Pearl serves no lunch Monday or Tuesday.
Earliest doors: Washtenaw Dairy at 5am weekdays, Erratic Ale at 7am, Argus and Zingerman’s Roadhouse at 8am.
Latest doors: Frita Batidos to midnight Friday and Saturday; Grizzly Peak’s Den to midnight on weekends.
If it has walls, ask. The heated structure is comfortable and it is also, by the rule the state’s variance paperwork uses, indoors.
Tire them out first. Most of these sit near Gallup Park, the Nichols Arboretum, or the Border-to-Border Trail. A long walk first buys you a calm hour at the table. Our dog park guide has the full list of off-leash options.
