The Best Restaurants in Downtown Ann Arbor

Downtown Ann Arbor does not close gradually.

Most guides to downtown Ann Arbor restaurants sort by cuisine, which is useful right up until you are standing on Main Street at ten past ten watching the chairs go up. So we built this list a different way. We took twenty-eight restaurants inside the downtown core, pulled their published hours, checked them against each restaurant’s own website, and put the week into a spreadsheet to find out when you can actually eat.

The answer is sharper than we expected. At 9pm on a Wednesday, seventeen of these twenty-eight rooms are serving. At 10pm, three are. Downtown loses fourteen kitchens in sixty minutes, and it does much the same thing on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday are the only nights the city holds its shape past ten, and even then only thirteen rooms make it.

Here is the whole downtown core, sorted by how late it feeds you, with hours verified in October 2026.

The three that serve food after 10pm on a weeknight

Five nights out of seven – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday – the list of downtown restaurants serving food at 10pm is exactly three names long, and it is the same three names every time.

The pattern worth noticing: none of them is a dinner restaurant. Downtown has seven rooms that open only for dinner, and all seven are shut before these three counter kitchens hit their stride.

Fleetwood Diner, 300 S Ashley St. The diner has been on this corner since 1949 and it does not close at all. Hippie Hash – potatoes under grilled vegetables, feta and sour cream – is the thing people order at 3am and the thing they order at 3pm. It is a small building with a handful of stools and booths, so a post-bar crowd means a wait on the sidewalk.

New York Pizza Depot, 605 E William St. Known locally as NYPD, this is the latest kitchen downtown by a clear margin – 3am every single night, which is an hour past last call. Thin-crust by the slice, and the William Street address puts it between the bars and the dorms on purpose.

Frita Batidos, 117 W Washington St. Chef Eve Aronoff’s Cuban-inspired counter – spiced burgers on soft rolls under shoestring fries, milkshakes made with tropical fruit – served at communal white picnic tables. It runs to 11pm nightly and midnight on Friday and Saturday, which makes it the only room downtown that is both a genuine dinner destination and open late five nights a week.

At 11pm the list drops to two. Frita Batidos has closed, and only the diner and the pizza counter are left.

The 9pm wall

This is where most of downtown lives: open through the afternoon, serving dinner, finished by nine or half past.

Tomukun Korean BBQ, 505 E Liberty St. Tabletop grills, banchan, and the same hours every day of the week, which is rarer downtown than it sounds – it is one of only a handful of rooms here with no day off and no weekend variation.

Shalimar, 307 S Main St. North Indian on Main Street, and one of only two restaurants in this entire list that publishes a true split service: lunch stops at 2:45pm and dinner does not begin until 5pm. Turn up at 3:30 and the door is locked. Closed Tuesdays.

Regular hours: lunch 11:30am-2:45pm and dinner 5-9:30pm (Fri-Sat to 10:30pm), closed Tuesday. Verified 7 Oct 2026 via Google Places; shalimarrestaurant.com publishes no hours, so call 734-663-1500.

Miss Kim, 415 N Fifth Ave. Ji Hye Kim’s Korean kitchen in Kerrytown, built on Michigan produce and historical Korean recipes. Closed Tuesdays – the most commonly missed closure downtown, because little else nearby shuts that day.

Real Seafood Company, 341 S Main St. The big Main Street fish room, white tablecloths and a raw bar. Note the ragged opening times: 11:45am most days, but 4pm on Monday and 1pm on Sunday.

Jolly Pumpkin, 311 S Main St. Sour and wild-fermented beer from the Dexter brewery, truffle fries, and a rooftop that is the reason to come between April and October. Weeknights it does not open until 4pm.

Blue Nile, 221 E Washington St. Ethiopian, served communally on injera, with a vegetarian platter that has been feeding this town for decades. Evenings only, closed Mondays.

Pacific Rim by Kana, 114 W Liberty St. Pan-Asian fine dining, open since 1997, and the latest opener on the list at 5:30pm on weeknights. Dinner only, every day.

The early closers

These are the rooms people most often reach too late, because an 8pm or 9pm cutoff reads as improbable for a city with a university in it.

The Earle, 121 W Washington St. The basement French and Northern Italian room with the celebrated wine list – and the earliest cutoff of any serious restaurant downtown. The Earle publishes a last seating, not a closing time, and on Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday that last seating is 8:00pm. Friday and Saturday it moves to 9pm. Closed Mondays.

This is the detail that reframes the whole list: the most formal dining room in downtown Ann Arbor stops seating tables before Jerusalem Garden’s falafel counter stops serving.

Jerusalem Garden, 314 E Liberty St. Falafel, shawarma and lentil soup for under $15, and the downtown lunch locals have been eating for forty years. Note the address – it moved to 314 E Liberty and is no longer on Fifth Avenue. Closed Sundays.

Detroit Street Filling Station, 300 Detroit St. Fully vegan, from The Lunch Room group, in the Kerrytown spot where the original Lunch Room used to be. Closes at 8pm every night.

Zingerman’s Delicatessen, 422 Detroit St. The most famous address in Ann Arbor food, and the one whose hours surprise visitors most: the deli runs 11am to 7pm, seven days. There is no Zingerman’s dinner service. Plan it as lunch or an early supper, and expect a queue that moves faster than it looks.

Earthen Jar, 311 S Fifth Ave. All-vegetarian Indian sold by weight – you fill a container and it goes on a scale. The cheapest full meal downtown, and open the fewest hours of any restaurant here: five days, seven hours a day.

Regular hours: Tue-Sat noon-7pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Verified 7 Oct 2026 from earthenjar.com, which prints this grid alongside a closure line that contradicts it – call 734-327-9464 if you are making a special trip.

The rooms that open late in the day

Seven downtown restaurants never serve before 3pm on any day of the week: The Chop House, The Earle, Aventura, Blue Nile, Pacific Rim by Kana, Vinology and Palio. Two more, Mani Osteria and Spencer, belong in the same planning bucket on a weeknight but do open for weekend lunch. If your plan involves a late lunch, none of these is an option.

The Chop House, 322 S Main St. Dry-aged steak, a jacket-optional dining room, and the highest average cheque downtown. Opens 5pm on weeknights and 4pm at weekends, and runs to 11pm on Friday and Saturday – one of the few white-tablecloth rooms that survives the 10pm cliff on a weekend.

Palio, 347 S Main St. Italian over two floors with a seasonal rooftop, a Main Street fixture for three decades. Weeknights 5pm, weekends 4pm.

Regular hours: Mon-Thu 5-10pm, Fri-Sat 4-11pm, Sun 4-9pm. Verified 7 Oct 2026 from paliorestaurant.com.

Aventura, 216 E Washington St. Spanish tapas, a serious gin list, and a courtyard. At 3pm it is the earliest of the dinner-only rooms to unlock, which makes it the practical answer to a 3:30pm arrival downtown.

Vinology, 110 S Main St. Wine bar and restaurant at the top of Main, opens 4pm, closed Sundays.

Mani Osteria, 341 E Liberty St. Wood-fired pizza and handmade pasta, and the downtown room most likely to need a booking. Weekends it opens at noon; weeknights not until 4pm. Closed Mondays.

Spencer, 113 E Liberty St. A small, ambitious room doing a changing menu of shared plates – and the single most misread set of hours downtown. Google shows Spencer open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 9pm. That is the wine shop. The restaurant runs a different and much narrower schedule: dinner Thursday to Sunday, 5-9pm, by reservation only, no walk-ins, plus a walk-in weekend lunch on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Arrive on a Wednesday evening expecting dinner and there is not any.

Spencer is the clearest example of a trap running through this whole category. When a business is really two businesses sharing a door – a wine shop and a kitchen, a bar and a dining room – the hours that reach Google are usually the ones belonging to whichever half stays open longest. That is almost never the half that cooks.

The all-day rooms

A few downtown restaurants genuinely run from late morning to late evening without a break, and on a day with no plan these are the safe bets.

Grizzly Peak, 120 W Washington St. Brewpub a block off Main, brewing on site since 1995. Burgers, fish and chips, house beer. Worth knowing that the attached bar, The Den, runs an hour later than the restaurant on Friday and Saturday – the kitchen closes at 11pm while the bar goes to midnight.

Old Town Tavern, 122 W Liberty St. The unpretentious corner bar with wooden booths, good chilli and a better burger. Important if you are checking elsewhere: the tavern publishes kitchen hours, and they run a full hour earlier than the times most listings show, because those listings are reporting the bar. The kitchen stops at 9pm Monday and Sunday, 10pm Tuesday to Thursday, and 11pm Friday and Saturday.

Sava’s, 216 S State St. Big State Street room across from campus, open 9am to 10pm daily, and one of only five places downtown serving before 10am. Broad menu, reliably busy.

Regular hours: Sun-Thu 9am-10pm, Fri-Sat 9am-11pm. Verified 6 Oct 2026.

Cafe Zola, 112 W Washington St. Mediterranean and Turkish-inflected, known for breakfast, and the earliest non-diner door downtown at 8am. It also runs straight through to 10pm, making it the only room here that covers breakfast, lunch, afternoon and dinner on the same day.

Regular hours: Sun-Thu 8am-10pm, Fri-Sat 8am-11pm. Verified 7 Oct 2026 via Google Places; cafezola.com lists addresses but no hours, so call 734-769-2020.

Slurping Turtle, 608 E Liberty St. Ramen, bao and sushi from the Chicago original. Two things to flag, both from the restaurant’s own site: Wednesday service does not begin until 5pm – no lunch at all – and the site does not publish Friday or Saturday hours. Aggregators show Wednesday from 11:30am and the weekend running to 11pm; the restaurant confirms neither.

Breakfast and the 3pm shift

Two downtown rooms are breakfast-and-lunch only, and both stop at 3pm sharp. They are the reason the afternoon count dips before the dinner rooms open.

Afternoon Delight, 251 E Liberty St. Downtown’s long-running breakfast and lunch cafe – omelettes, fresh juice, big salads. Closed Mondays.

Regular hours: Tue-Sat 8am-3pm, Sun 8:30am-3pm, closed Monday. Verified 7 Oct 2026 from afternoondelightcafe.com.

The Hen, 403 E Washington St. Rebranded from Stray Hen Cafe, still the same kitchen doing scratch breakfast and lunch. Its own site puts it plainly: open daily 8am to 3pm, with a rest on Wednesdays.

Between them, Monday and Wednesday each remove one of downtown’s two dedicated breakfast rooms. On a Wednesday morning Afternoon Delight is your option; on a Monday, The Hen is.

The whole downtown core, by closing time

Which day to come

The grid makes the week’s shape plain, and it is not evenly distributed.

Thursday is the best night downtown. It is the only day of the week on which not one of these twenty-eight restaurants takes a day off, and at 6pm it has twenty-six kitchens running – the highest count of any hour in the week.

Monday removes six rooms at once, and they are among the most recommended: The Earle, Mani Osteria, Spencer, Blue Nile, Afternoon Delight and Earthen Jar. A Monday visitor working from a best-of list will strike out repeatedly.

Tuesday removes three – Miss Kim, Shalimar and Spencer. Wednesday removes two, Spencer and The Hen, and quietly pushes Slurping Turtle’s opening back to 5pm. Sunday removes three – Jerusalem Garden, Vinology and Earthen Jar – and, more to the point, empties early: only nine rooms are still serving at 9pm on a Sunday, against seventeen on a Wednesday.

Friday and Saturday are the only nights the 10pm cliff softens. Thirteen rooms are still serving at ten, including the steakhouse, both brewpubs and both Main Street Italians. By 11pm even that is back down to three.

If you want one rule: downtown Ann Arbor’s dinner hour is 6pm to 9pm, and everything outside it is a much shorter list than the restaurant count suggests.

What we could not pin down

Four of these twenty-eight restaurants publish no hours at all on their own websites – Real Seafood Company, Cafe Zola, Tomukun Korean BBQ and Shalimar. Their times here come from Google’s listing, cross-checked against current review activity, and we have printed the phone number in each entry rather than present an aggregator’s figure as a restaurant’s own word.

Slurping Turtle’s site omits Friday and Saturday entirely. Earthen Jar’s site prints a set of hours and a closure line that disagree with each other. And holiday weeks, home football Saturdays and the week either side of commencement move all of this, sometimes by hours. Everything above is a regular week, verified on 7 October 2026. If you are making a special trip for one particular room, the phone call is still worth it.
