Ann Arbor’s best restaurants, sorted by when you can go.

Every list of the best restaurants in Ann Arbor tells you where to eat. Almost none of them tell you the thing that decides your evening: four of the rooms people recommend most are closed on Mondays, five never serve lunch at all, and two of the best shut on Sundays. A list you cannot use on the night you are free is not much help.

So this one is built the other way round. Seventeen restaurants spanning Kerrytown, the Jackson Avenue institutions, downtown, State Street, the east side and a restored 1886 train depot, each with a working link to its listing and hours checked against the restaurant’s own website on 6 October 2026. The grid below comes first, because it answers the question you actually have.

Which nights everything is open

We pulled published hours for the sixteen restaurants below and worked out, day by day, how many are actually serving dinner at 7pm. The answer is less obvious than you would think.

Three things fall out of that table.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the only three nights when every restaurant on this list is serving dinner. If you are planning the one meal that matters and you want the full field to choose from, those are your nights.

Monday takes four of the most-recommended rooms in the city off the board at once. The Earle, Mani Osteria, Spencer and Blue Nile all close. Wednesday is the quiet surprise: nothing on this list is shut, though Spencer runs its wine shop without dinner service that night.

Five of these sixteen kitchens never serve lunch on any day. The Chop House, The Earle, Pacific Rim by Kana, Aventura and Blue Nile open in the late afternoon or evening only. Mani Osteria and Spencer serve lunch at weekends but not midweek. If you are booking a midday meal, half a typical best-of list simply does not apply.

One more number worth having: eleven of the sixteen serve straight through 3pm, so the mid-afternoon arrival that defeats most cities is well covered here. And only three open before 10am – Weber’s at 7:30, Zingerman’s Roadhouse at 8, Sava’s at 9.

The special-occasion tables

Four rooms are built for an anniversary, a graduation dinner, or the night the parents are paying.

The Chop House at 322 South Main Street downtown is the dressed-up steakhouse: dry-aged cuts, a deep wine list, and a dark, quiet room that holds a conversation. Book ahead on a home-game weekend, when it fills before the rest of Main Street does.

The Earle at 121 West Washington Street is the downstairs French and Northern Italian dining room with live jazz most nights and a wine program that has outlasted every trend since the 1970s. This is the take-the-parents room. Note the early last seating: the kitchen stops at 8:30pm midweek, which catches people out.

Gandy Dancer at 401 Depot Street puts seafood and steaks inside the restored 1886 Michigan Central depot, all stone walls and arched windows by the tracks. Trains still pass. Ask for a table by the windows. It is also one of the few special-occasion rooms here that serves lunch every day of the week.

Knight’s Steakhouse at 2324 Dexter Avenue is the original west-side Knight’s, a family steakhouse since 1952 that locals rate as highly as anything downtown and at a gentler price. It keeps the broadest hours of any steakhouse on this list, open from 11am straight through to 10pm. The one catch is Sunday, when it closes entirely.

The institutions you bring visitors to

When someone flies in and asks what Ann Arbor food actually is, these three are the answer, and none of them is on Main Street.

Zingerman’s Delicatessen at 422 Detroit Street, on the Kerrytown edge, is the reason a lot of people first hear about Ann Arbor food at all. The sandwiches are big, numbered, and worth the counter line and the price. Split a Reuben and add a side from the case. The hours surprise people: it is an 11am to 7pm operation, so it is a lunch and early-dinner stop, not a late one.

Zingerman’s Roadhouse at 2501 Jackson Avenue is the same family’s take on regional American cooking: real pit barbecue, macaroni and cheese worth ordering, and one of the better breakfasts in town. Go for weekday breakfast when it is quiet. It is the second-earliest door on this list.

Weber’s Restaurant at 3050 Jackson Avenue has been the west-side supper club since 1937, known for prime rib and a room that has not chased fashion in decades. It runs the most complicated schedule here and the most generous: a breakfast counter from 7:30am, lunch from 11, bar service through the afternoon, then dinner from 4. The Sunday brunch buffet from 9am to 2pm is an institution in its own right. An earlier version of this guide said the kitchen closed between lunch and dinner; in fact the restaurant publishes bar service from 2pm to 4pm, so the room stays open all day.

The chef-driven rooms

These are the tables people who eat out a lot in Ann Arbor actually rave about.

Spencer at 113 East Liberty Street is the small, ambitious room that cooks a short menu of seasonal small plates alongside a serious natural-wine list. It is also the most misread set of hours in the city, so read this carefully: the 12pm to 9pm you will find listed on Google is the wine shop. Dinner service runs Thursday through Sunday from 5pm to 9pm and is by reservation only. Weekend lunch, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm, is walk-in. Turn up on a Wednesday evening expecting dinner and you will be buying a bottle instead.

Miss Kim at 415 North Fifth Avenue in Kerrytown Market is modern Korean cooking built on seasonal and historical recipes, from the Zingerman’s family. Order whatever bokkeumbap is on that week, and the rice cakes. Tuesday is its day off, which is easy to forget because it is open on the Monday that closes so much else.

Mani Osteria & Bar at 341 East Liberty Street is the downtown room people default to when the group cannot agree: blistered wood-fired pizzas, house pastas, and a bar that works for a solo dinner. Order a pizza and one of the vegetable small plates. Midweek it is a dinner-only kitchen opening at 4pm; lunch is a Friday-to-Sunday thing.

Pacific Rim by Kana at 114 West Liberty Street is the quiet upscale pan-Asian room downtown, the one that has kept its footing while flashier places came and went. The patio is the seat to ask for in warm weather. It opens later than anything else on this list, at 5:30pm midweek.

Global flavors worth crossing town for

Four rooms are worth a specific drive, and none is on the tourist path.

Aventura at 216 East Washington Street is the Spanish tapas bar downtown, doing paella, jamón, and a long gin-and-tonic list in a room that fills on weekends. Go early or plan to wait for the good tables. It opens at 3pm every day, which makes it one of the better answers to a late-afternoon arrival.

Blue Nile at 221 East Washington Street serves Ethiopian food the traditional way: a communal platter lined with injera, eaten with your hands, with a vegetarian spread that converts skeptics. It is a genuinely different evening out and it works well for a group. Strictly an evening restaurant, and closed Mondays.

Seva at 2541 Jackson Avenue, near Westgate, has been the city’s vegetarian anchor since 1973, and the kitchen still turns out food that meat eaters order without noticing. This is the reliable answer when someone in the group does not eat meat. Remember that Sunday is its one closed day.

Paesano Restaurant & Wine Bar at 3411 Washtenaw Avenue is the east-side Italian room that has quietly fed this side of town for decades, with a patio that is the best reason to drive out in warm weather. One honest caveat: Paesano’s own website publishes two different sets of hours on two different pages, so the figures below are the ones listed in our directory and on Google rather than a single confirmed statement from the restaurant. All day and always reliable

When you want a good table without a reservation or a special occasion, two rooms just deliver.

Sava’s at 216 South State Street, across from campus, runs a broad all-day American menu that works for a late breakfast, a study lunch, or an early dinner. It is the safe pick when you are feeding a mixed group near State Street, and at 9am it is the third-earliest door here.

Frita Batidos at 117 West Washington Street is the bright communal-table spot doing Cuban-inspired fritas and batidos, the tropical milkshakes you can have spiked. Get the chorizo frita with the fried egg. It keeps the latest hours on this list by a clear margin, to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Two closures worth knowing about

Ann Arbor lost two rooms that still appear on plenty of best-of lists, so to save you a wasted trip:

The Ravens Club, 207 South Main Street, has closed after fifteen years. Its own website now reads: “After 15 years, The Ravens Club has come to an end, and something new is beginning to blossom in its place.” It traded from 2011 to 2026, and the owners point to rising rent. A successor concept is promised for the space.

Isalita, the Mexican cantina at 341 East Liberty Street, closed on 23 December 2024 after twelve years. Owner Adam Baru folded his attention into Mani Osteria next door, and the space is becoming Mani Next Door, an expansion with a private dining room.

How to use this list

If you have one night and want the widest choice, make it Thursday, Friday or Saturday, when all sixteen are serving.

If your free evening is a Monday, you still have twelve of them, but skip straight past The Earle, Mani Osteria, Spencer and Blue Nile. Monday is a good night for Knight’s, Gandy Dancer, Miss Kim or the Roadhouse.

If it is a Tuesday, everything is open except Miss Kim and Spencer. If it is a Sunday, remember Seva and Knight’s are closed, and Weber’s brunch buffet becomes the obvious move.

Planning lunch rather than dinner? Work from the eleven that serve it, and know that The Chop House, The Earle, Pacific Rim, Aventura and Blue Nile are not in that group on any day. Arriving mid-afternoon, around 3pm? Eleven of the sixteen are still serving, and Aventura opens at exactly that hour.

Football Saturdays, winter breaks and holidays all shift them, so treat the grid above as a regular week and call the day before for anything that matters. Last seatings are earlier than closing times at the dinner-only rooms, and The Earle’s 8:30pm midweek finish is the one that most often catches people.
