Ann Arbor’s best restaurants aren’t all downtown.
The blocks around Main and Liberty get the attention, but some of the rooms locals actually book for the night that matters sit out on Jackson Avenue, up in Kerrytown, or in an 1886 train depot by the river. This is the city-wide short list: the steakhouses and special-occasion tables, the institutions you bring out-of-town family to, and the chef-driven rooms worth crossing town for. Thirteen places, sorted by the occasion you’re planning, each with a working link to its listing and hours verified in August 2026. A few take a midweek day off or open only for dinner, so read the hours before you drive.
The special-occasion tables
Three rooms are built for an anniversary, a graduation dinner, or the night the parents are paying.
The Chop House at 322 South Main Street downtown is the dressed-up steakhouse: dry-aged cuts, a deep wine list, and a dark, quiet room that holds a conversation. It is dinner-only, open Monday through Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday 5pm to 11pm, Saturday 4pm to 11pm, and Sunday 4pm to 9pm. Book ahead on a home-game weekend.
The Earle at 121 West Washington Street is the downstairs French and Northern Italian dining room with live jazz most nights and a wine program that has outlasted every trend since the 1970s. It is closed Mondays, then open Tuesday through Thursday 5pm to 8:30pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm to 9:30pm, and Sunday 5pm to 8pm. This is the take-the-parents room.
Gandy Dancer at 401 Depot Street puts seafood and steaks inside the restored 1886 Michigan Central depot, all stone walls and arched windows by the tracks. It is open Sunday 11am to 9pm, Monday through Thursday 11:30am to 9:30pm, and Friday and Saturday 11:30am to 10pm, with a bar happy hour on weekday afternoons. Ask for a table by the windows.
The institutions you bring visitors to
When someone flies in and asks what Ann Arbor food actually is, these three are the answer, and only one is downtown.
Zingerman’s Delicatessen at 422 Detroit Street, on the Kerrytown edge, is the reason a lot of people first hear about Ann Arbor food at all. The sandwiches are big, numbered, and worth the counter line and the price. It is open every day 11am to 7pm, and the line moves faster than it looks. Split a Reuben and add a side from the case.
Zingerman’s Roadhouse at 2501 Jackson Avenue is the same family’s take on regional American cooking: real pit barbecue, macaroni and cheese worth ordering, and one of the better breakfasts in town. It is open Monday through Friday 8am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 9pm. Go for weekday breakfast when it’s quiet.
Weber’s Restaurant at 3050 Jackson Avenue has been the west-side supper-club institution since 1937, known for prime rib and a room that hasn’t chased fashion in decades. Dinner runs Monday through Thursday 4pm to 8:30pm and Friday and Saturday to 9:30pm, with a Sunday brunch buffet 9am to 2pm and Sunday dinner from 4pm. Note the daily gap: the kitchen breaks between lunch and the 4pm dinner service.
The chef-driven rooms
These are the tables people who eat out a lot in Ann Arbor actually rave about.
Miss Kim at 415 North Fifth Avenue in Kerrytown Market is modern Korean cooking built on seasonal and historical recipes, from the Zingerman’s family. It is closed Tuesdays, then open Monday and Wednesday through Thursday 11:30am to 9pm, Friday 11:30am to 9:30pm, Saturday 11am to 9:30pm, and Sunday 11:30am to 9pm. Order whatever bokkeumbap is on that week and the rice cakes.
Mani Osteria & Bar at 341 East Liberty Street is the downtown room people default to when the group can’t agree: blistered wood-fired pizzas, house pastas, and a bar that works for a solo dinner. It is closed Mondays, then open Tuesday through Thursday 4pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday noon to 10pm, and Sunday noon to 9pm. Order a pizza and one of the vegetable small plates.
Pacific Rim by Kana at 114 West Liberty Street is the quiet upscale pan-Asian room downtown, the one that has kept its footing while flashier places came and went. It is dinner-only, open Monday through Thursday 5:30pm to 9:30pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm to 10pm, and Sunday 5pm to 9pm. The patio is the seat to ask for in warm weather.
Global flavors worth crossing town for
Two rooms are worth a specific drive, and neither is on the tourist path.
Aventura at 216 East Washington Street is the Spanish tapas bar downtown, doing paella, jamón, and a long gin-and-tonic list in a room that fills on weekends. It opens at 3pm daily, running to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. Go early or plan to wait for the good tables.
Seva at 2541 Jackson Avenue, near Westgate, has been the city’s vegetarian anchor since 1973, and the kitchen still turns out food that meat eaters order without noticing. It is open Monday through Saturday 11am to 9pm and closed Sunday. This is the reliable answer when someone in the group doesn’t eat meat.
All-day and always reliable
When you want a good table without a reservation or a special occasion, two rooms just deliver.
Sava’s at 216 South State Street, across from campus, runs a broad all-day American menu that works for a late breakfast, a study lunch, or an early dinner. It is open Monday through Thursday 9am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 11pm, and Sunday 9am to 10pm. It’s the safe pick when you’re feeding a mixed group near State Street.
Frita Batidos at 117 West Washington Street is the bright communal-table spot doing Cuban-inspired fritas (spiced burgers) and batidos (tropical milkshakes you can spike). It keeps the longest hours on this list: Sunday through Thursday 11am to 11pm and Friday and Saturday 11am to midnight. Get the chorizo frita with the fried egg.
Before you go
Hours here were verified in August 2026, but football Saturdays, winter, and holidays all shift them, so treat this as a regular week and call the day before for anything that matters. If you’re staying downtown and want everything in walking distance, the downtown Ann Arbor restaurant guide narrows it to a few blocks. Eating your way through one cuisine instead? Start with the best Korean restaurants or the best vegetarian restaurants in town.
