The kitchen closes before the restaurant does.
That one sentence explains most ruined special-occasion dinners in this town. You look up a restaurant, the listing says it is open until eleven, you book a table for nine and arrive to find the kitchen shut at ten and the bar running out the clock. Or you drive downtown on a Monday to the one room that has been closed on Mondays since 1977.
Ann Arbor has a genuinely deep upscale bench for a city this size, and the food is rarely the problem. The booking is. Every restaurant below takes reservations differently: one refuses walk-ins entirely, one sells tickets instead of tables, one will charge your card twenty dollars a head if you cancel late, and one has two locations in the same city with separate reservation systems that people mix up constantly.
So this guide is sorted by how you get in the door. For each room you get the closed days, the dinner service, the real deadline for ordering food, and which platform actually holds the table. All of it was checked against the restaurant’s own website on 20 September 2026.
Book ahead or you are not eating
These three do not work on a walk-in basis, and each one for a different reason.
Spencer
Spencer is the strictest door in Ann Arbor, and it is worth understanding before you try. Dinner is by reservation only. Their own site puts it plainly: no walk-ins, sorry. There are four dinner nights a week, Thursday through Sunday, and the room is small.
There is a second, much easier way in that most people miss. Weekend lunch runs Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and takes no reservation at all, first come and first served. Same kitchen, same wine list, none of the booking pressure. If you have ever wanted to try the place on short notice, that is the opening.
The attached wine shop keeps its own longer schedule, Wednesday through Sunday, which is why the hours you see on aggregator sites often look wider than the actual dinner service. The shop being open does not mean dinner is being served.
Dinner Thursday to Sunday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., by reservation only. Weekend lunch Saturday and Sunday noon to 4 p.m., walk-in. Wine shop Wednesday to Sunday noon to 8 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. 113 E Liberty St. Reservations at reservations@spencerannarbor.com or 734-369-3979. Verified 20 September 2026.
Blue LLama Jazz Club
Blue LLama sells shows, not dinner slots, and that is the thing to understand. Most performances need an advance ticket bought through the event page rather than a normal restaurant reservation. Covers range from free on some Wednesday nights up to about $25 for featured acts.
Performances run in two sets, generally 7 p.m. and then either 8:30 or 9 p.m. depending on the artist, so the set time is your real arrival deadline, not the closing time. Book the earlier set if you want a relaxed dinner before the music starts.
Wednesday and Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Sunday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Two sets most nights, typically 7 p.m. and 8:30 or 9 p.m. 314 S Main St. Tables and tickets through Tock, or 734-372-3200. Verified 20 September 2026.
Aventura
Aventura does modern Spanish tapas and paella, and it has the most specific cancellation policy on this list. For parties of five or more they take a credit card hold at booking, and cancelling with less than 24 hours notice is charged at $20 per person. That is a real number worth knowing before you book a group of eight and hope for the best.
It opens at 3 p.m. every day, which makes it one of the few upscale rooms downtown that can do an early dinner. Happy hour runs daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday to Thursday 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Open daily. Parties of five or more take a credit card hold, $20 per person for cancellations inside 24 hours. 216 E Washington St. Booking through Tock, or 734-369-3153. Verified 20 September 2026.
The special-occasion rooms
These are the anniversary and graduation-dinner rooms, and the ones where the last seating matters most.
The Earle
The Earle has been the special-occasion basement on Washington since 1977, serving French and Italian country cooking in a low-lit room.
The number that matters here is the last seating, not the closing time. Tuesday through Thursday and again on Sunday, the last seating is 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday it is 9 p.m. Arrive at 8:15 on a Wednesday and you have missed dinner. It is closed Mondays.
There is live music every night it is open, starting at 7 p.m.: solo piano or guitar Tuesday through Thursday, and a soft jazz trio Friday and Saturday. Book the 7 p.m. seating and the music starts as you sit down. The wine list runs past 1,200 selections and has held the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 35 consecutive years.
Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday, 5 p.m. with last seating at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. with last seating at 9 p.m. Closed Monday. Live music nightly at 7 p.m. 121 W Washington St. 734-994-0211. Verified 20 September 2026.
The Chop House
The Chop House is the formal steakhouse on Main, serving USDA Prime beef aged 28 to 34 days. Dinner only, seven nights.
Of the rooms on this list it is the one that states a dress expectation: business casual, which the house describes as a suggestion rather than a rule. Sunday runs an hour earlier than the rest of the week, opening at 4 p.m. and closing at 9 p.m., which catches people out on holiday weekends. Private dining is available for birthdays and office dinners through their parties page.
Monday to Thursday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Open daily, dinner only. 322 S Main St. Reservations through their site, Resy or OpenTable, or 734-252-0223. Verified 20 September 2026.
Gandy Dancer
Gandy Dancer sits in the restored 1886 Michigan Central Depot on Depot Street, which is the most impressive dining room in the city by a wide margin and the reason it gets booked for anniversaries and parents’ weekends.
It is the most forgiving room here for the unplanned night: a portion of the dining room is always held open for walk-ins. The exception is Sunday brunch, which is popular enough that they ask you to reserve. It is also one of the few upscale rooms serving lunch, opening at 11:30 a.m. on weekdays.
Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Open daily. Part of the room held for walk-ins. 401 Depot St. 734-769-0592. Verified 20 September 2026.
Vinology
Vinology is the wine-led room at 110 S Main, open seven days and doubling as a private event space.
Watch the kitchen here. Their own site notes the kitchen closes one hour before the bar does, so on a Friday listed until 11 p.m. the food stops at 10. Sunday opens earliest at 3:30 p.m. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday to Thursday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Open daily. Kitchen closes one hour before the bar. 110 S Main St. 734-222-9841. Verified 20 September 2026.
Dinner-only kitchens on a tight clock
Two downtown rooms, both on Liberty, both opening only for dinner, and both with a hard stop earlier than their listed close.
Peridot
Peridot serves Vietnamese-influenced cooking and cocktails at 118 W Liberty. Note that address: a number of listings still carry an older one, and the restaurant’s own site is the one to trust.
It runs late for Ann Arbor, to 11 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on Friday and Saturday, but the kitchen closes one hour before the room does. It is closed Sundays. Tock takes the booking, for parties of one to eight.
Monday to Thursday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to midnight. Closed Sunday. Kitchen closes one hour before close. 118 W Liberty St. Reservations through Tock, parties of 1 to 8, or 734-773-3097. Verified 20 September 2026.
Pacific Rim by Kana
Pacific Rim by Kana has been doing contemporary pan-Asian cooking at 114 W Liberty for years, a few doors from Peridot. Dinner only, seven nights.
The quirk is the start time: it opens at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday but half an hour earlier, at 5 p.m., on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday nights are the ones worth booking ahead.
Monday to Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Open daily, dinner only. 114 W Liberty St. Reservations through Tock or 734-662-9303. Verified 20 September 2026.
The long-running institutions
Three rooms that have been serving this area for decades, all of them outside the downtown core, all of them easier to book than the Main Street places.
Weber’s Restaurant
Weber’s has been on Jackson Road since 1937, doing classic American cooking with its own bakery, and it is the rare upscale room here that serves breakfast.
The thing to know is the gap. Weber’s runs two services with a closed stretch in the middle: 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., then a break, then dinner from 4 p.m. Turn up at 3 p.m. and the dining room is dark. Dinner runs to 8:30 p.m. most nights and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Daily 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., then 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday dinner runs to 9:30 p.m. Closed between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. 3050 Jackson Rd. Reservations through OpenTable or 734-665-3636. Verified 20 September 2026.
Knight’s Steakhouse
Knight’s Steakhouse on Dexter Avenue is the original, open since 1984, and it is the most common booking mistake in Ann Arbor.
There are two Knight’s steakhouses in this city: the Dexter Avenue original at 2324 Dexter Ave, and a separate downtown location at 600 E Liberty. They are different restaurants with separate reservation systems, and Knight’s own site specifically asks you to confirm which one you are booking. Check before you confirm.
The Dexter Avenue room is closed Sundays and major holidays. It lists an 11 p.m. close, but the kitchen shuts at 10 p.m., so the last hour is bar only. Patio seating is first come, first served and weather permitting, never reservable.
Monday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., kitchen closes 10 p.m. Closed Sunday and major holidays. 2324 Dexter Ave. 734-665-8644. Confirm you are booking Dexter Avenue and not the downtown location. Verified 20 September 2026.
Real Seafood Company
Real Seafood Company has been at 341 S Main since 1975 and is the downtown option when someone in the party wants fish rather than steak.
Its schedule is the most irregular on this list, so read it twice. Monday is dinner only, opening at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday it opens for lunch at 11:45 a.m. Sunday it does not open until 1 p.m.
Monday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday 11:45 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Open daily. 341 S Main St. 734-769-7738. Verified 20 September 2026.
Worth the drive to Ypsilanti
Bellflower
Bellflower at 209 Pearl Street in downtown Ypsilanti is the upscale room worth the fifteen-minute drive, serving brunch, dinner, wine and cocktails a few steps from the Riverside Arts Center.
Its hours are widely listed wrong, so take these from the restaurant’s own site: it is closed Mondays, brunch runs weekends only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday. There is no Sunday dinner service, which is the detail that catches people who have read a stale aggregator listing.
Dinner Tuesday to Thursday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend brunch Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. No Sunday dinner. Closed Monday. 209 Pearl St, Ypsilanti. Reservations at bellflowerypsi.com. Verified 20 September 2026.

Everything above in one place. The deadline column is the one people get wrong.

Before you book
Three habits will save most of these nights.
Call if the reservation is load-bearing. Holiday weeks, football Saturdays and graduation weekend all move these schedules, and a restaurant that adds a private event will close the dining room without updating every listing that carries its hours.
Trust the restaurant’s own site over anything else. Building this guide, the aggregator hours were wrong or stale for Spencer, Peridot and Bellflower, in every case in a way that would have sent someone to a closed door. Where a restaurant’s own page and a review site disagreed, the restaurant’s page won.
And book the earlier seating. Nearly every room here stops serving food well before it stops being open, and the last seating is where a special-occasion dinner quietly turns into drinks at the bar.
For less formal nights out, the best restaurants in Ann Arbor covers the city-wide picture, downtown Ann Arbor restaurants stays inside the core, and the date night guide builds the whole evening rather than just the meal.
