The Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor has fed vegetarians well since 1973.

That is the year Seva opened, and the city has built a real meatless scene around it since: all-vegetarian buffets, two fully vegan kitchens from the same family, and a run of Indian, Middle Eastern, and North African rooms where the vegetable side of the menu is the reason to go. If you eat vegetarian or vegan in Ann Arbor, you are not hunting for a single safe dish on someone else’s menu. You have full restaurants to choose from. Here are ten of the best, sorted by how far they take it, each with hours verified in August 2026. A few keep short or shifting weekly schedules, so the closed days are worth reading before you drive.

Fully vegetarian, no exceptions

Three kitchens here serve no meat at all, so anyone at the table can order anything.

Seva at 2541 Jackson Avenue, in the Westgate area, is the one that started it. It has been an all-vegetarian restaurant since 1973, with a broad menu that runs from enchiladas to stir-fries to its long-standing sweet potato fries, plus a full bar and a lot of vegan-marked options. It is open Monday through Saturday 11am to 9pm and closed Sundays. This is the safe pick when a mixed group needs one place that works for everyone.

Earthen Jar at 311 South Fifth Avenue, downtown, is the all-vegetarian Indian spot where you fill a container from the hot buffet and pay by weight. Much of it is vegan, the turnover is quick, and it is one of the best cheap lunches in the city. Plan around the schedule: it is open Tuesday through Saturday noon to 7pm and closed Sunday and Monday.

Namaste Flavours at 400 South Division Street is a vegetarian-focused Indian kitchen with a wide vegan and gluten-free selection and a weekday lunch buffet. It is open Monday and Wednesday through Friday 11:30am to 3pm and 5pm to 10pm, Saturday 11:30am to 2pm and 3:30pm to 10pm, and Sunday 11:30am to 2pm and 3:30pm to 9pm, and it is closed Tuesdays.

Fully vegan

Two rooms from the same local family cook entirely plant-based, and they are the go-to when someone at the table is strictly vegan.

The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe now runs out of 2200 Fuller Court, by Huron Towers, as an all-vegan bakery and cafe: house pastries, sandwiches, and a rotating counter menu. It keeps daytime hours only, Monday through Friday 8am to 2pm, and is closed weekends. Come for breakfast or an early lunch.

Detroit Street Filling Station at 300 Detroit Street, in Kerrytown next to the farmers market, is the Lunch Room’s full-service sister restaurant and the one to sit down at for dinner. Everything is vegan, from the loaded fries to the seasonal bowls and cocktails. It is open Monday through Friday 11:30am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 8pm.

Middle Eastern and North African, where meatless is the point

These three serve some meat, but their menus are built on beans, grains, and vegetables, so a vegetarian or vegan meal here is the default rather than a compromise.

Jerusalem Garden at 314 East Liberty Street has been the downtown value pick since 1987, with falafel, hummus, mujadara, and a combo plate that feeds you well for under $15, most of it vegan. It is open Monday through Saturday 11am to 8:30pm and closed Sundays.

El Harissa Market Cafe at 1516 North Maple Road is a North African and Mediterranean cafe and market with a deep bench of vegan and vegetarian dishes, from harissa-spiced stews to grain plates. It is open Tuesday through Sunday noon to 7pm and closed Mondays.

Ayse’s Turkish Cafe at 1703 Plymouth Road is a small, long-running Turkish spot where the meze table alone makes a full vegetarian meal: stuffed grape leaves, red lentil koftes, roasted eggplant, and warm bread. It is open Monday through Saturday noon to 7pm and closed Sundays.

Indian tables with deep vegetarian menus

Ann Arbor’s Indian restaurants are some of the easiest places in town to eat vegetarian, and two beyond Earthen Jar and Namaste are worth building a meal around.

Cardamom at 1739 Plymouth Road, in the Courtyard Shops, is the dinner-out Indian room, with a modern menu and a full vegetarian section of paneer, dal, and vegetable curries. It is dinner only, open Wednesday and Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm to 10:30pm, and Sunday 5pm to 10pm, and it is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Shalimar at 307 South Main Street is the downtown North Indian standby, with a long meatless list and a midday buffet that leans heavily vegetarian. It is open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday 11:30am to 2:45pm and 5pm to 9:45pm, and Friday and Saturday 11:30am to 2:45pm and 5pm to 10:30pm.

A note on days off and short hours

The meatless kitchens in Ann Arbor take their days off on different schedules, so the wrong day can end at a locked door. The ones to plan around: Earthen Jar is closed Sunday and Monday, Namaste Flavours is closed Tuesdays, El Harissa is closed Mondays, Cardamom is closed Monday and Tuesday, and Seva, Jerusalem Garden, and Ayse’s are all closed Sundays. Several also keep short hours, from the Lunch Room’s weekday-morning-only counter to the dinner-only rooms at Cardamom. The hours above were verified in August 2026, but any single day is worth a quick call before you drive.
