Kerrytown, Ann Arbor: What Is Open, and When

Kerrytown runs three different markets in one shed.

That is the thing to understand about this neighborhood before anything else. The covered pavilion at 315 Detroit St is a farmers market on Wednesday, a different farmers market on Saturday, and a craft market on Sunday. Four days a week it is an empty building. Almost every other guide to Kerrytown tells you to “come on a Saturday” and stops there, which is correct but hides the more useful half of the answer.

So this one is sorted by time rather than by category. We pulled the published schedule for 40 businesses inside the district – roughly E Ann St north to Depot St, N Main east to N Division – and worked out when the neighborhood actually exists. Hours were verified on 9 October 2026, venue websites first.

The short version: Kerrytown is a morning and midday neighborhood that empties hard at 7pm, Monday is the day to avoid, and the pavilion has eleven Wednesdays and eleven Sundays left in its 2026 season.

The shed at 315 Detroit St

Two separate organizations share the pavilion, and neither runs every day.

The Ann Arbor Farmers Market is the Saturday institution, and it is the only part of the pavilion that runs year-round. Saturdays are 7am to 3pm from May through December, then 8am to 3pm from January through April. The Wednesday market is a seasonal addition: 7am to 3pm, and in 2026 it runs 6 May through 23 December only.

That Wednesday season matters right now. From today there are eleven Wednesday markets left in 2026, the last on 23 December. After that the shed goes Saturday-only until May.

Sunday in the same building belongs to the Sunday Artisan Market, which is a different thing entirely – makers and craft rather than produce, 11am to 4pm. It is also seasonal, and its 2026 season runs 12 April through 20 December. Eleven Sundays left, the last on 20 December.

Worth saying plainly, because no aggregator will tell you: on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there is nothing in the shed. The building is still there, the neighborhood around it is open, but the market you came for is not running.

A note on where those dates came from. Google lists both markets as simply “Wednesday and Saturday 7am-3pm” and “Sunday 11am-4pm” with no end date and no January change, because an hours field has nowhere to put a season. Both seasons and the January shift come from the markets’ own sites. If you are planning a February visit, that distinction is the whole ballgame.

Before 9am, Kerrytown is four doors

The market opens at 7am, which raises an obvious question: where do you get coffee at 7am on a market Saturday?

The answer is short. At 7am on a weekday exactly three places are open in the whole district – Zingerman’s Next Door Cafe at 418 Detroit St, Sweetwaters in the Kerrytown building at 407 N Fifth Ave, and Mocha House at 109 Catherine St. On Sunday at 7am it is one: the Next Door Cafe.

Sweetwaters is the earliest and latest cafe in Kerrytown and the single most useful address in this guide if you are working to someone else’s schedule. It opens 6:30am Monday through Saturday, 8am Sunday, and runs to 10pm every night of the week.

Saturday is the exception that proves the market’s pull. At 7am on a Saturday there are six doors open rather than three, because both butchers in the Kerrytown building come in an hour early for market day. Monahan’s Seafood Market and Sparrow Market both open 8am on a weekday and both open 7am on Saturday. Nothing else in the district shifts its opening time for the market, which tells you who the market’s actual neighbors are.

That Monahan’s line is worth reading twice, because it is two businesses behind one door. Google reports the fish counter and nothing else, and it reports Sunday as 10am-5pm when the shop’s own site says 10am-3pm. If you are going for the lunch counter – the chowder and the fish sandwich, which is what most people mean when they say they are going to Monahan’s – you have a four-hour window, and on Sunday it is bagels and lox or nothing.

The other reliable early door is the People’s Food Co-op at 216 N Fourth Ave, 8am to 9pm every single day with no exceptions. In a district this seasonal and this closure-prone, a business with one schedule for all seven days is genuinely useful, and the co-op is the only full grocery among them.

Nine hours a week

The best illustration of how Kerrytown actually works is a smokehouse on Kingsley.

Durham’s Tracklements and Smokery, at 212 E Kingsley St, cures and smokes fish and makes its own gravlax, and it opens to the public Wednesday 10am to 2pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm. That is nine hours a week, and they are the same two days the farmers market runs. Outside those windows it is by appointment.

A business that only exists on market days is the clearest possible answer to “when should I come to Kerrytown.” If you want one rule for this neighborhood, make it Durham’s opening hours and work outwards.

Lunch, which is what Kerrytown is for

The district’s signature meal is lunch, and the schedule proves it rather than the other way round.

Zingerman’s Delicatessen at 422 Detroit St is the most reviewed business in the neighborhood by an order of magnitude, and it is open 11am to 7pm, seven days a week. There is no dinner service. The most famous address in Kerrytown closes before the tea shop, before the co-op, before the tavern and before the record store. Come for a sandwich at noon, not at eight.

Next door at 418 Detroit St, the Next Door Cafe runs 7am to 7pm daily and is the morning half of the same operation – pastry, coffee, and the deli’s bread four hours before the deli opens.

Across the street, Detroit Street Filling Station at 300 Detroit St is the all-vegan room, 11:30am to 8pm weekdays and noon to 8pm at weekends. One structural note: detroitstreetfillingstation.com now redirects to thelunchrooma2.com. That is the parent group consolidating its websites, not a closure – the restaurant is open and keeping normal hours.

PizzaPazza works a wood oven at 407 N Fifth Ave, 11am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday – an early close by pizzeria standards, and the 5pm Sunday is the earliest closing kitchen in the district.

No Thai! Kerrytown at 226 N Fourth Ave is, by the arithmetic, the latest kitchen in Kerrytown six nights a week: 11am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, noon to 9pm Sunday. Worth knowing that the chain’s locations differ sharply on Sundays – Plymouth Rd and S Main are closed, South U opens at 3pm, and Kerrytown opens at noon. The Kerrytown branch is the Sunday one.

Casey’s Tavern at 304 Depot St is the neighborhood bar, 11:30am to 10pm Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. Casey’s now runs a second location on Commonwealth Blvd; the Depot St room is this one, in the old brick building by the tracks.

Gandy Dancer sits in the restored 1886 Michigan Central depot at 401 Depot St and is the district’s one formal dining room – 11:30am to 9:30pm Monday through Thursday, to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 9pm Sunday. Happy hour runs 3:30 to 6:30 Monday through Friday and is available in the bar, lounge and patio only, not at a dining table.

The two Kim rooms

This is the most pleasing fact in the whole dataset.

Miss Kim at 415 N Fifth Ave is the Korean room – seasonal menu, market-driven, open 11:30am to 9pm most days, a little later on Friday and Saturday, and closed Tuesday.

Little Kim, two doors down at 403 N Fifth Ave, is its fast-casual sibling: chef-driven, entirely vegetarian, drawing on Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Indian cooking, 11:30am to 6pm – and closed Monday.

So between 403 and 415 N Fifth Ave there is a Kim room open every single day of the week, and on two of those days you do not get a choice. Monday is Miss Kim only. Tuesday is Little Kim only. Wednesday through Sunday you can have either.

Little Kim is new enough that it is still missing from most maps of the district, and it is the only fully vegetarian kitchen in Kerrytown.

The 7pm cliff

Here is the number that should change how you plan a visit.

At 6pm on a Wednesday, 22 of the businesses we tracked are open. At 7pm, 11 are. Half the neighborhood closes at seven o’clock, and the pattern holds all week: Monday goes 18 to 8, Thursday 22 to 11, Friday 21 to 10, Saturday 18 to 10.

By 9pm you are down to between four and seven doors, and they are almost always the same ones – No Thai, Casey’s, Gandy Dancer, Sweetwaters and TeaHaus.

At 10pm, Kerrytown has exactly one door open, and only on four nights of the week. North Star Lounge at 301 N Fifth Ave runs 5pm to 11pm Wednesday through Saturday. Monday, Tuesday and Sunday at 10pm, nothing in the district is open at all.

North Star is worth the walk on its own terms – it is Michigan’s first entirely vegan bar, run by the same group as Detroit Street Filling Station, with live music most nights. One detail the hours field cannot carry: the full kitchen menu is served 5pm to 8pm only, and after eight it is vegan bar snacks. So the honest answer to “where do I eat in Kerrytown after nine” is bar snacks at North Star, Wednesday to Saturday, and that is it.

If you want coffee rather than a bar, you have to leave the district. Jabal Coffee House at 341 E Huron St sits at the southern edge, a few minutes’ walk from Fourth Avenue and closer to downtown than to the market, which is why it is not in the counts above. It pours Yemeni-grown coffee and it runs to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and to midnight Friday and Saturday. On a Friday night at eleven, when every door in Kerrytown proper except North Star is dark, that is the nearest room still serving.

TeaHaus, at 204 N Fourth Ave, is the other late room and the one most likely to surprise you. A tea shop open to 10pm sounds like a data error; it is not. Owner Lisa McDonald took a liquor license to serve tea-infused drinks and moved the business toward evening cafe hours, which is why a loose-leaf retailer now closes at the same time as the coffee shops.

There is a catch, and it is a good example of why a single hours line is never the whole story. TeaHaus stopped serving food at 204 N Fourth in March 2020; the kitchen moved to a separate leased space facing E Ann St, and the full English tea service now runs out of that room on a scheduled basis rather than daily. Same business, two addresses, and the famous tea service is not the thing you walk into at 204.

Monday is the day to skip

Twelve of the 40 businesses we tracked are closed all day Monday. That is the worst day in the district by a wide margin, and it hits the things people travel for: no farmers market, no artisan market, no Durham’s, no Hands-On Museum, no TeaHaus, no Little Kim, no North Star, and all three galleries dark.

Tuesday is the second-worst at nine closures, and it swaps which rooms you lose – Miss Kim goes dark, Little Kim comes back.

Wednesday and Saturday are the two good days, with two and one all-day closures respectively, and they are of course the two market days. Thursday and Friday sit at three, which is simply the market being absent.

The shops, and one building that lies about itself

Kerrytown Market & Shops at 407 N Fifth Ave is the brick complex everybody means when they say Kerrytown, and its published building hours are the least reliable number in this guide.

Google lists the building as 8am-7pm on weekdays and 10am-6pm at weekends. Both are true of the building and false of almost every shop inside it. The 8am opening comes from Sparrow and Monahan’s; the 7pm close comes from the same two; and the 10am Saturday is flatly contradicted by those shops opening at 7am on market day. Most of the actual tenants – Mudpuddles, Fustini’s Oils & Vinegars, the Kitchen Loft, MALOFTA Vintage, Nuuyuu Collective and Ann Arbor Spice & Tea Merchants – run 10am to 6pm on weekdays, 9am to 6pm Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday. kerrytown.com publishes a tenant directory but no hours at all.

Go by the shop, not the building. The directory currently lists 26 tenants, including the Knife Stop, Iron+Oak and DuckaDilly, which between them have no hours published anywhere we could find.

Four of those tenants are worth singling out, because they are not interchangeable gift shops. Fustini’s pours single-varietal olive oils and aged balsamics from fustis you taste at the counter before anything is bottled. The Kitchen Loft sells cookware and runs a real class programme upstairs – pasta making, knife skills, knife sharpening – on evenings and mornings that sit outside its retail hours, so a 6:30pm class is not a sign the shop is open late. Nuuyuu Collective is not a shop with a buyer at all but a floor of consignment booths, rented by the week at 35 dollars, stocked and priced by whoever took the booth, which is why the mix is different every time you walk in. And Ann Arbor Spice & Tea Merchants sells spices and loose-leaf tea by weight, which is how you end up with a tablespoon of something you need exactly once.

One warning on that last one. The national Spice Merchants website publishes a weekday-only 8:30am-5pm schedule with Saturday and Sunday closed. That is the chain’s corporate and wholesale office, not the Kerrytown counter – a Kerrytown shop shut on Saturday would be dark on farmers-market day, the busiest morning of the district’s week. On Fourth Avenue the retail is denser and the schedules are more honest. Motte & Bailey Booksellers at 212 N Fourth Ave is the antiquarian shop, 10am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday – the only Kerrytown retailer that keeps the same hours six days running and then shuts for the seventh. Encore Records at 208 is 11am to 7pm with a short Sunday, and at 401 reviews it has the deepest review pool of any shop on the street. Thistle & Bess at 222 is the tightest schedule of any shop here, Wednesday through Sunday only, and it sells fine jewelry rather than gifts.

Three more Fourth Avenue doors are worth knowing, and two of them break the district’s rules. Mindo Chocolate Makers at 206 makes bean-to-bar chocolate from organic Nacional cacao grown in the Ecuadorian cloud forest, and it is open 8am to 7pm every day – the widest schedule on the street and one of the few Kerrytown doors that opens before nine. Fourth Ave Footwear at 209 has been a woman-owned shoe shop since 1989 and is enough of a Birkenstock specialist to trade online as annarborbirkenstock.com; its noon-to-4pm Sunday is the shortest regular day on the block. And Spun at 410, a family-owned yarn and craft shop with its own class schedule, trades until 8pm Monday through Thursday. That makes Spun the one shop in Kerrytown you can reach after work, four hours later than most of the district – though note Friday is an early close at 6pm, not a late one.

Two doors hide from the street. V2V is an independent women’s clothing shop at 415 N Fifth Ave, the courtyard building that also holds Miss Kim and Found, which makes 415 the most efficient single stop in Kerrytown if you have twenty minutes. And Your Media Exchange is in the basement of 410 N Fourth Ave, below Spun, buying, selling and trading movies, music, books and games with no street-level window to catch your eye. Its own site claims seven days a week while Google has it closed Monday; since that page also announces a website still being rebuilt, treat Monday as closed and call (855) 444-9767 first.

Over on Detroit Street, Catching Fireflies at 419 carries handmade and oddball gifts and unusual home decor, 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday. Six identical weekdays makes it one of the easier schedules to remember in a district full of shops that close two days a week, and it is the natural stop while somebody else queues at Zingerman’s.

Everyday Wines at 410 N Fourth Ave opens at 9am on weekdays and 8am on Saturday, which makes it the earliest wine shop in Ann Arbor and a slightly surreal market-morning errand.

Art, music and the kids

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum at 220 E Ann St is the reason a lot of families end up in Kerrytown at all – four floors of science exhibits, 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday, closed Monday, $16 for adults and kids alike with under-twos free.

The gallery block on E Ann St and N Fourth Ave is small, excellent, and almost entirely a Wednesday-to-Saturday proposition. The Gutman Gallery at 118 N Fourth Ave is 11am to 5pm Wednesday through Saturday – it is the gallery of The Guild of Artists & Artisans, the nonprofit that also runs the Ann Arbor summer art fairs, at the same address. WSG Gallery at 111 E Ann St is the artist-run co-op, noon to 5pm Wednesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm Saturday, noon to 5pm Sunday. Chris Nordin Studios Gallery at 117 E Ann St keeps the shortest week of anything in this guide – Thursday and Friday noon to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm, closed Monday through Wednesday.

Kerrytown Concert House at 415 N Fourth Ave is the chamber-music room in a converted house, and it is the one venue here with no weekly schedule to publish – it opens when there is a concert. It is actively programming: its calendar runs through December 2026 and it hosted Edgefest 30 earlier this month. Check the calendar, then book, then plan dinner around it rather than the other way round.

What we could not pin down

A fair number of the venues above publish no schedule on their own websites, and those are cited to Google with the phone number printed: Miss Kim, PizzaPazza, Casey’s Tavern, Everyday Wines and Mocha House, plus the three galleries and the Kerrytown-building shops that keep the tenant grid. TeaHaus publishes hours our server cannot reach, because teahaus.com rate-limits us, so it is cited to Google and cross-checked against current review activity.

Several attributions improved on this pass. Zingerman’s Next Door Cafe was previously cited to Google because zingermansdeli.com returns 403 to our server; a headless browser reads the cafe’s own page, which states 7am to 7pm, so that one is now first-party. Encore Records, Thistle & Bess, Spun, Fustini’s and Nuuyuu Collective all turned out to publish their own grids, and all five match what Google reports. Those last two matter beyond themselves: they are the proof that the Mon-Fri 10-6, Sat 9-6, Sun 11-5 tenant grid is real, which is what makes it citable for the tenants in the same building that publish nothing.

One attribution got worse rather than better. Ann Arbor Spice & Tea Merchants has a website in its Google profile, and that website contradicts its retail hours, because it is the chain’s wholesale office rather than the shop. A website is not automatically a better source than Google; it has to be a website about the thing you are asking about.

Kerrytown Market & Shops publishes a tenant directory with no hours, and three of its listed tenants have no hours anywhere. Kerrytown Concert House has no weekly hours by design. The Guild is an organization rather than a shopfront. None of those four are included in the open-door counts above, because guessing would have corrupted the arithmetic.

One last thing worth knowing if you have an older guidebook: Hollander’s, the decorative-paper shop that anchored 410 N Fourth Ave for nearly thirty years, closed its retail store in 2020 and now trades online from Ypsilanti. The space is occupied, and the business is still going; it is just not in Kerrytown.

How to use this

If you have one morning, take a Wednesday or a Saturday, and get there before nine. Park at the Ann & Ashley structure, walk the market, pick up smoked fish from Durham’s while it is open, get a sandwich at Zingerman’s when it opens at eleven or chowder at Monahan’s lunch counter, and browse Fourth Avenue before the shops close at six or seven.

If you only have an evening, make it Wednesday to Saturday and keep it simple: dinner at No Thai, Casey’s or Gandy Dancer, then North Star Lounge for music and a vegan snack until eleven. Any other night, the neighborhood is effectively done by nine.

And if it is a Monday, go somewhere else.
