You took the job at Michigan. The offer letter was the easy part.
Now you are choosing a neighborhood from four hundred miles away, with a partner who also needs a life here and a kid who needs a park. Almost everything written about moving to Ann Arbor is written for nineteen-year-olds with a dorm assignment.
This is written for the other arrival: a salary, a household, and a Saturday you would like to enjoy.
Where you work decides more than you think
Ann Arbor is not one campus. Central Campus sits between State Street and downtown, close enough that plenty of faculty walk to it. The Medical Campus is just north of that, across from the hospital complex on the hill.
North Campus is the one people miss on a house-hunting trip. Engineering, music, art and architecture live about two miles northeast, up past the Huron, and the drive between the two campuses at 8:45am is a real drive, not a nominal one.
Pick your neighborhood off your building, not off the word “campus.” A ten-minute walk to Central is a twenty-five-minute commute to North.
The parts of town, described honestly
The Old West Side is the grid of pre-war houses west of Main Street. Sidewalks, porches, alleys, a lot of academics, and downtown on foot in about fifteen minutes. It is the default answer for a reason and it is competitive when a house comes up.
Burns Park, southeast of Central Campus, is the other default. Big trees, an elementary school in the middle of the neighborhood, kids on bikes, and a walk to campus for one partner if not both.
Water Hill, northwest of downtown, is hillier and a bit less finished, with a homemade music festival every spring that tells you most of what you need to know about the block.
Kerrytown and the Old Fourth Ward put you at the north edge of downtown with the market as your grocery run. If you are considering it, the Kerrytown guide walks the whole neighborhood.
Ann Arbor Hills and the streets east of Washtenaw trade walkability for bigger lots and quiet. North of the river, along Broadway and Plymouth Road, is the practical choice if you work on North Campus or at the hospital.
Then there is everything past the city line – Pittsfield, Scio, Ann Arbor Township, and the towns beyond: Saline, Dexter, Chelsea. You get land and a garage. You give up walking anywhere, and you drive to dinner.
One piece of advice worth more than any neighborhood ranking: school district boundaries do not follow the mailing address. An Ann Arbor address can sit in a different district. Confirm the actual attendance area before you sign anything.
What a Saturday looks like here
The honest answer is that a good Ann Arbor Saturday is small. Breakfast, a market, a walk somewhere green, dinner you did not cook. The town supports that pattern better than almost anything else it does.
Start at The Jefferson Market at 609 W Jefferson Street, a corner spot in the Old West Side doing all-day breakfast and lunch. You order at the counter, find your own table, and eat outside when the weather allows. It fills with neighbors, which is the point.
Then Argus Farm Stop Packard Cafe at 1200 Packard Street, which is a farm store and a coffee bar at the same time. Most of what you spend goes back to the farmers who grew it, and you can walk out with vegetables for the week plus a decent flat white.
That combination – breakfast, groceries from someone you can name, and a table to sit at – is the thing new arrivals tell us they did not expect from a town this size.
Green space is the part people underestimate
The parks are the reason a lot of people stop missing wherever they came from. Washtenaw County has an unusual amount of protected land for a place with a research university in it, and most of it is fifteen minutes from your door. The full set lives on our outdoors section.
Woolley Park on W Textile Road is a Pittsfield Township park on the south edge of town – open ground, easy parking, the kind of place you go for an hour after work rather than plan a day around.
Montibeller Park at 4305 Ellsworth Road is the same idea further east, and it is the one to know if you land somewhere south or in the townships. Both are township-run, which means less crowding than the city parks on a nice weekend.
Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve at 4501 Platt Road is a different animal. It is a Legacy Land Conservancy preserve rather than a park, so expect a trail and quiet, not a playground and a ballfield. Go when you need the version of a walk where nobody talks to you.
For an actual outing, Maybury State Park out at Eight Mile in Northville is worth the half-hour east. Trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing in winter, plus a working educational farm that will absorb a small child for an entire morning. Michigan state parks run on the Recreation Passport, so add it when you register the car and forget about it.
The football Saturday reality, stated plainly
Nobody warns academic hires about this properly, so here it is. On home-game Saturdays in the fall, well over 100,000 people come to a stadium at Main and Stadium on the south side of town, and the whole city bends around it.
If you live within a mile of the stadium, your street becomes parking. People will sell spots on their front lawn. Traffic on Main, State, Stadium Boulevard and the I-94 ramps goes sideways from mid-morning, and bus routes get rerouted without much warning.
Kickoff times are often set only a week or two out, which means “Saturday afternoon” is not a plan in September and October until the schedule firms up. Do not book a moving truck, a contractor, a hospital visit or an early flight out of Detroit on a home Saturday without checking first.
Now the fair part. It ends. By dinner the crowd has thinned, downtown is fun rather than impassable, and the away Saturdays are the best days of the season to do anything you want in this town.
Plenty of people live here happily and never buy a ticket. You just have to know which Saturdays they are, and you learn that in one autumn.
Dinner when the kitchen is still in boxes
Chapala Mexican Restaurant at 211 N Main Street is the low-stakes family answer near the Kerrytown end of downtown. Big menu, margaritas, string lights, nobody minding a restless four-year-old. It has been there long enough that regulars get recognized.
Evergreen Downtown at 208 W Liberty Street is the sit-down Chinese option a block off Main, and it is the one to remember on the night when everyone is tired and nobody can agree. Easy walk from the Old West Side, easy parking structure if you are driving in.
Your first month
Set a low bar. Find one breakfast place, one park, one grocery run and one dinner you can repeat without thinking, and let the rest arrive on its own.
