Most shopping guides to this town are a list of shops with a sentence about what each one sells. That tells you where to go and nothing at all about whether the door will be unlocked, which is the part that actually decides how your afternoon goes.
Here is the fact that runs underneath all of it. Shopping in Ann Arbor is a midday business. Downtown independent retail is not a 10-to-9 operation and it is not a mall. A meaningful share of the best shops in this city do not open until 11am, one does not open until noon, and a lot of them are locked by 7pm. The window is narrower than visitors expect, it narrows further on Sunday, and on Monday several of the things people specifically drive in for are simply not running.
None of that is a complaint. Small shops keep the hours that small shops can afford to keep. But it means the useful way to organise a shopping guide to Ann Arbor is not by district or by category. It is by the clock and the calendar.
Every set of hours below was checked against the business’s own website or its own published hours on 27 September 2026. Where a first-party source disagrees with the aggregators, the first-party source wins and we say so.
The shape of the week, in one paragraph
If you are coming for a full day, come Saturday. It is the only day when the farmers market, the artisan shops, the antique dealers and the late-closing stores all overlap. Sunday works but it is compressed: plan a late-morning start and expect to be finished by five. Monday is the day to avoid if shopping is the whole point of the trip, because the Ann Arbor Farmers Market does not run, the Sunday Artisan Market does not run, the antique shop in Nickels Arcade is closed, and the largest thrift store in town is closed. And if you are arriving in the evening, the honest answer is that downtown is mostly done and the Eisenhower corridor is where the lights are still on.
Before 11am: a short list, and one big exception
The earliest shopping in Ann Arbor is not a shop at all.
Ann Arbor Farmers Market, 315 Detroit Street, is a 7am business that is finished at 3pm, which is the exact inverse of everything else in this guide. It is the oldest and best-known retail institution in the city and it catches people out constantly, because the instinct is to treat a market as an afternoon activity. It is not. By two o’clock the good stalls are packing. Come early, and come on the right day: right now it runs Wednesday and Saturday.
Hours: Wednesday and Saturday 7am to 3pm from May through December. From January through April it drops to Saturday only, 8am to 3pm. Verified against the City of Ann Arbor’s own market page, 27 Sep 2026. The Wednesday market ends with December, so a Wednesday trip in February will find an empty pavilion.
Kerrytown Market & Shops, 407 N. Fifth Avenue, is the other early door: the building opens at 8am on weekdays and 7am on Saturday. It is a multi-level indoor market of food stalls and specialty shops, and it is the right answer for a rainy morning because all of it is under one roof.
Hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm, Saturday 7am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 3pm. Verified 27 Sep 2026. Note the Sunday window is five hours, the tightest Sunday in this guide, and individual tenants inside the building keep their own hours within the building’s.
After those two, the 10am openers are the reliable early tier: Rock Paper Scissors, Cherry Republic, the Ann Arbor Art Center, Bivouac, Literati, and out south, Briarwood and REI. Everything else in this guide is an 11am or noon proposition.
Main Street: the 10-to-8 core
South Main between Liberty and William is the densest independent retail in Washtenaw County, and its hours are more generous than the rest of downtown.
Rock Paper Scissors, 216 S. Main Street, is a cards, stationery, gifts and Michigan-goods shop, and it keeps the latest weekday hours of any independent store in this guide – 9pm, six nights a week, which matches the mall. If you need a gift at 8:30 on a Tuesday, this is the address.
Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 10am to 6pm. Verified against rockpaperscissorsshop.com, 27 Sep 2026. Their own hours page notes hours shift seasonally, so check before a holiday-week trip. Worth knowing: the company’s Saline store is listed as closed permanently on its own site, so if an older roundup sends you to Saline, it is out of date.
Vault of Midnight, 219 S. Main Street, is the comics, graphic novel and board game shop, open since 1996, and it holds the latest closing time downtown: 10pm on Friday and Saturday. It is also an 11am opener, so it is the reverse of the market – useless in the morning, the last door open at night.

Cherry Republic, 223 S. Main Street, is the Traverse City cherry company’s Ann Arbor store, and it is the most efficient souvenir stop in the city – jams, dried cherries, salsas, wine and soda, all of it shippable, all of it recognisably Michigan.
Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm, Sunday 11am to 6pm. Verified 27 Sep 2026.
State & Liberty, 212 S. Main Street, is the Ann Arbor-founded performance menswear label, in its home-town store. Note the hours carefully: it is an 11am to 7pm operation, seven days, which means it is one of the shops most likely to be shut when you walk past it on the way to dinner.
Hours: 11am to 7pm daily. Verified 27 Sep 2026. Appointments are available through their site if you want fitting help rather than a browse.
Literati Bookstore, 124 E. Washington Street, is a block off Main and is the downtown bookstore people mean when they say “the bookstore.” Three floors, a famous public typewriter on the landing, strong staff picks.
Hours: Monday to Thursday 10am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 11am to 7pm. Verified against literatibookstore.com, 27 Sep 2026. One correction worth making because it is in so many older guides: the upstairs coffee bar is closed and has not reopened. The bookstore itself is fully open. Go for the books, not for a coffee.
Ann Arbor Art Center, 117 W. Liberty Street, runs galleries on multiple floors plus a shop selling work by Michigan artists. It is the best place downtown to buy something made by a person who lives here.
Hours: currently Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm, Sunday 11am to 5pm. Verified 27 Sep 2026. These are published as fall hours, so re-check in the new year.
Today Clothing, 215 S. Fourth Avenue, is a menswear and footwear boutique that has been running since 2013, and it is the latest opening in this guide.
Hours: the shop’s own contact page posts 12pm to 7pm and does not break the week down by day, so we are not going to invent one. Verified as published on todayclothing.com, 27 Sep 2026. Call 734-548-8301 before a Sunday or Monday trip.

State Street and Nickels Arcade: the tightest windows in town
Campus-side retail keeps shorter and stranger hours than Main Street, and one of the best shops here is closed two days a week.
Bivouac, 336 S. State Street, has been the city’s outdoor and campus clothing store for decades. Watch the Sunday line: it does not open until 11:30am and closes at 5pm, a five-and-a-half-hour Sunday against an eight-and-a-half-hour Monday.

Arcadian Antiques, 328 S. State Street, Suite 13, sits inside Nickels Arcade, the glass-roofed 1918 shopping arcade that runs through the block between State and Maynard and is worth walking through whether or not you buy anything. The shop has been family-run since 1983 and deals in antique jewellery and collectibles. It also has the narrowest schedule of anything in this guide.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. Verified 27 Sep 2026. Note there is a second, separately-operated Arcadian Antiques Boutique at 838 S. Main; the Nickels Arcade shop is the one at this address and these hours.
The Dawn Treader Book Shop, 514 E. Liberty Street, is the used and rare bookshop, seventy-thousand-plus titles deep, stacked floor to ceiling in the way a used bookshop should be. It is an 11am opener but it stays open until 8pm, which makes it the best after-dinner browse on this side of downtown.

Kerrytown: a Sunday problem and a Sunday answer
Kerrytown is the district most people picture when they picture shopping in Ann Arbor, and it has the sharpest day-of-week split in the city.
The problem: the farmers market does not run on Sunday, and the Kerrytown Market building closes at 3pm on Sunday.
The answer is in the same pavilion. The Sunday Artisan Market, 315 Detroit Street, takes over the farmers market pavilion every Sunday and brings up to sixty regional artists and craftspeople with it. 2026 is its thirty-fifth season. This is the single best reason to shop Kerrytown on a Sunday rather than a Saturday, and it is the thing most visitor guides leave out entirely.
Hours: Sundays 11am to 4pm, running 12 April through 20 December 2026. No admission fee and free parking, per the market’s own site. Verified 27 Sep 2026.
Found, 415 N. Fifth Avenue, is the Kerrytown shop for handmade ceramics, modern home goods, art and gifts, and it keeps the most forgiving hours in the district – open seven days, and open until 7pm on weekdays when the market building around it has emptied out.
Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 7pm, Sunday 11am to 6pm. Verified against foundgallery.com, 27 Sep 2026. They publish reduced 11am-3pm hours for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and close for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

After 7pm, or on a Sunday afternoon: go south
When downtown closes around you, the Eisenhower and Briarwood corridor is still trading, and it is a ten-minute drive.
Briarwood Mall, 100 Briarwood Circle, keeps conventional mall hours and is the only place in the area where you can reliably shop at 8:30pm on a weeknight.
Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 11am to 6pm. Verified 27 Sep 2026. Note the Sunday close is 6pm, no later than downtown, so the mall’s advantage is weeknights rather than Sundays.
REI, 970 W. Eisenhower Parkway, runs the same late weeknight pattern and is the other realistic evening option, with a full service bike shop attached.
Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 11am to 6pm. Verified 27 Sep 2026. REI notes hours can shift seasonally.
Thrift and resale: a Thursday-to-Sunday shop
Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop, 2280 S. Industrial Highway, is the big one, and its proceeds go to Ann Arbor public school parent-teacher organisations. It is also the clearest example in this guide of why first-party hours matter.
Hours: Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm. Closed Monday through Wednesday. Verified against a2ptothriftshop.org, 27 Sep 2026. Several aggregators and its own Nextdoor page publish a Monday-to-Friday 9am-7pm schedule, which would send you to a locked door on a Monday morning. Donation drop-off runs on different days again – Wednesday 10am to 4pm and Friday to Sunday 10am to 5pm – and the shop cannot take donations in rain or snow, so call 734-996-9155 first.

Worth the drive: Chelsea
Serendipity Books, 119 S. Main Street in Chelsea, is a twenty-five minute drive west and is the best single-shop reason to make it. It is a woman-owned independent bookstore with new and used stock, and it keeps longer Thursday-to-Saturday hours than any bookstore in Ann Arbor proper, staying open to 8pm three nights a week.

Two addresses that have changed
These come up often enough to be worth stating plainly, because a lot of published guides and map results still have them wrong.
The M Den’s State Street store is no longer the M Den. 303 S. State Street now trades as Rally House, following the M Den’s bankruptcy and the closure of its State Street and Main Street stores. The M Den itself is still operating from its team shop at 333 E. Stadium Boulevard, and has signed new locations at 711 N. University and at Westgate on Jackson Avenue, announced in September 2026 but not open as of this writing. So: if you want Michigan gear on State Street, the door is open, it just has a different name over it. If you specifically want the M Den, call the Stadium Boulevard shop first – its published hours are Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm, verified 27 Sep 2026.
JOANN on Oak Valley Drive is closed. The Ann Arbor store shut on 27 April 2025 as part of the chain’s nationwide liquidation, and the company no longer exists as a retailer. There is no fabric-and-craft chain replacement in the city, so quilting, yarn and sewing supplies are now a Kerrytown-and-independents errand rather than a big-box one.

A last word on timing
The single most useful thing to take from this page: in Ann Arbor, the shops open late and close early relative to what a visitor expects, and the good stuff clusters between 11am and 6pm. If you build the day around that window rather than around a list of names, you will not spend an afternoon reading hand-written signs through locked glass.
Hours change, and small shops change them without much notice. Everything here was verified on 27 September 2026 against the business’s own published hours wherever a first-party source exists. Before a long drive, or any trip in a holiday week, call ahead.
