Where to Watch the Michigan Game if You Don’t Have a Ticket

The ticket sold out. The Saturday did not.

Watching the game in a room full of people who care is its own event, and it costs about the price of a beer. The whole trick is picking the right room, because the bar that is perfect for a night game with five friends is the wrong call if you actually want to follow the play.

So here are eight sports bars in Ann Arbor, sorted by what the room is like rather than by what is hanging on the wall. The room is the part that does not change.

First, work out which Saturday you have

Home games empty the town into the stadium. Away games do the opposite, and those are the Saturdays this guide is really for, because that is when everyone in Washtenaw County needs somewhere to sit.

Michigan’s 2026 home dates: 5 September vs Western Michigan, 12 September vs Oklahoma, 19 September vs UTEP, 26 September vs Iowa, 17 October vs Penn State for Homecoming, 24 October vs Indiana, 7 November vs Michigan State, and 21 November vs UCLA. That is eight Saturdays with the crowd inside Michigan Stadium.

Note the ones that are not on that list. An away game against a name opponent fills downtown harder than a home game against a small one, because on a home Saturday half the room is inside the stadium.

Two honest notes before you pick

We list the bars. We do not list their equipment, so we cannot tell you how many screens a place has, which game goes on the biggest one, or whether the sound will be up or the jukebox will be. Nobody who has not phoned that week can tell you that either.

So phone. One call on the Thursday before a big game settles the screen, the sound, whether they are holding tables, and whether they open early for a noon kickoff.

The hours below are each venue’s regular week, verified in August 2026. Bars shift their opening times around the football calendar, and kickoff times themselves get set close to the date, so treat these as the baseline and confirm the specific Saturday before you walk over.

The big rooms, when you are a group

Grizzly Peak Brewing Co., 120 W Washington St

The most forgiving room downtown for a group that did not plan ahead. It is a brewpub built into an old warehouse building and it has kept growing sideways into connected rooms and bar areas, so there is usually somewhere to put six people even when the front looks hopeless.

That layout is the reason it works and also the reason to arrive with an opinion. Ask where the game is going and let them seat you accordingly, rather than taking the first table and discovering you are around a corner from everything.

It is a full brewpub kitchen too, which matters when the plan quietly turns into four hours. Grizzly Peak listing, on Washington a block off Main.

Regular hours: Sun to Thu 11:30am to 10pm, Fri and Sat 11:30am to 11pm, with the Den bar running later on weekends. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

Jolly Pumpkin Café Brewery, 311 S Main St

South Main, multi-level, and the pick when the group includes people who are here for the day rather than for the game. Downstairs is warm and woody, upstairs is the rooftop deck.

Be realistic about the roof. In September it is one of the better places to sit outdoors in Ann Arbor, but a deck is not where you go to hear a fourth-quarter drive. Treat it as the halftime move and go back down for the football.

The beer is wild-fermented and sour-forward, which is either the reason you came or a thing to know before you order a round for people expecting lager. Jolly Pumpkin listing.

Regular hours: Fri and Sat 12pm to 11pm, Sun 12pm to 9pm, Mon to Thu 4pm to 9pm. It opens at noon on Saturdays but only at four on weekdays, worth knowing for a weeknight basketball game. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

On campus, in the middle of it

The Garage Bar, 618 Church St

The closest room on this list to campus, off South University on Church Street, and the pick when you want to watch with students rather than alumni. It opens at noon on Saturdays and stays open until two, so it covers a noon kickoff and everything that happens after it.

It is a student bar and it behaves like one: loud, young, and busiest when the game is closest. That is either exactly the room you want or exactly the one you are avoiding, and the crowd tells you which within a minute of walking in.

Being on Church Street rather than Main means the walk from central campus is short, which is the whole point on a day when you do not want to deal with downtown. The Garage Bar listing.

Regular hours: Sat and Sun 12pm to 2am, Mon to Fri 3pm to 2am. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

The classic downtown room, open from late morning

Old Town Tavern, 122 W Liberty St

A block off Main on Liberty, and the downtown bar that most feels like a neighbourhood tavern despite sitting in the middle of everything. Wood, booths, a burger people order without reading the menu, and a television you can actually see from most seats.

It opens at half past eleven, which makes it a real option for a noon kickoff when the newer bars are still dark. Come early, take a booth, and you have quietly solved the whole afternoon.

The room is small enough to fill on a big Saturday, so the early arrival is doing double duty: it gets you the game and it gets you a seat. Old Town Tavern listing.

Regular hours: Mon and Sun 11:30am to 10pm, Tue to Thu 11:30am to 11pm, Fri and Sat 11:30am to 12am. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

The night rooms, when the crowd is the point

Alley Bar, 112 W Liberty St

Exactly what the name says: a bar down an alley off Liberty, small, cheap, and without pretense. It is one of the few rooms downtown where you hear the crowd before you hear a commentator, and for a lot of people that is the correct experience.

One thing to plan around: it opens at five on Saturdays, so this is a night-kickoff room, not a noon one. For an evening game it is a fine call.

Small also means it fills fast and stays full. This is a two or three person plan, not a six person one, and if you turn up at kickoff you are standing. Alley Bar listing.

Regular hours: Fri and Sat 5pm to 2am, Sun to Thu 7pm to 2am. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

The Circ Bar, 210 S 1st St

On First Street a block west of Main, upstairs above street level, with two bars and a roof deck and a crowd that skews younger as the night goes on. It opens in the evening, so this is the room for a night kickoff, or for the part of the evening that happens after the game ends and nobody wants to go home.

It is not where you go to analyse a coverage scheme. It is where you go when the result is already decided and the point is being out with people.

Worth knowing on a day when everything on Main Street is three deep at the door: First Street is far enough off the main drag that it sometimes has room when Main does not. The Circ Bar listing.

Regular hours: Tue to Sat 6pm to 2am, plus a Sun 11am to 3pm brunch. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

The rooms where you might still get a seat

Casey’s Tavern, 304 Depot St

Out on Depot Street by the old station, which puts it just off the downtown grid, and that is the entire reason to go. The people in here on a Saturday are mostly people who come here every Saturday.

It is an old tavern with a pool table and no interest in being anything else. If your priority is a chair, a burger, and a conversation you can conduct at a normal volume, start here and stop looking.

About a fifteen minute walk from central campus, or a short drive with parking that is not a downtown structure. One catch to note: it is closed on Sundays, so it is a Saturday-football room, not an NFL one. Casey’s Tavern listing.

Regular hours: Mon to Sat 11:30am to 10pm, closed Sunday. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

Fraser’s Pub, 2045 Packard St

The furthest from campus on this list at a shade over two kilometres, the most likely to have a table at kickoff, and the one that actually calls itself a sports bar. Packard is a neighbourhood street, so the crowd here is locals rather than people doing a downtown circuit.

Pool table, darts, a real draft list, and burgers that people who live nearby will argue about. It has the shape and the feel of a neighbourhood sports bar because that is exactly what it is.

The detail that makes it the pick for an early kickoff: during football season it opens at half past eight on Saturday mornings, so a noon start is no problem and neither is breakfast first. This is the honest answer for anyone who wants the game and the company but not the scrum. Fraser’s Pub listing.

Regular hours: Mon to Sat 11am to 2am, Sun 11am to 12am; from September through December it opens 8:30am on Saturdays for football. Verified 12 Aug 2026.

How early to actually show up

For a noon kickoff on an away Saturday, be sitting down by eleven, and note that Alley Bar and the Circ are not open yet at that hour. For a 3.30, get there by 2.30. For a night game, the room will fill twice, once before kickoff and again around nine when other plans collapse, so either come early or come late and skip the middle.

If you want a table rather than a stool, add half an hour to all of that, and go to one of the last two on the list. If you only want to be in the room, walk in whenever and be at peace with standing.

Driving in on a home Saturday is a different problem, and one we have written up separately in the Michigan Stadium parking guide. Downtown structures fill early on those days even for people not going to the game.

It is not only football

The useful thing about this list is that it keeps working in January. Basketball at Crisler and hockey at Yost run through the winter, mostly on evenings, and the bars above are far easier to walk into on a Thursday in February than on a Saturday in October.

Winter also flips the ranking. The big rooms are less necessary when nobody is fighting for space, so the neighbourhood pubs move to the top of the list and the reason to go becomes the walk home rather than the size of the crowd.

Whatever is on, phone ahead for anything that matters and browse the rest of the eat and drink section for somewhere to end up afterwards.
