Chocolate and Sweet Gifts in Ann Arbor: 12 Makers and What a Box Costs

Two makers near here start with the raw cacao bean.

That is the thing worth knowing before you buy a chocolate gift in this town. Some shops melt somebody else’s couverture, two of them start with a sack of raw beans, and one carries more than a hundred craft bars made by other people. This guide covers all three kinds, plus the macaron and cookie boxes, and every price came off the maker’s own site on 1 November 2026.

One address to check before you go, in the last section: the Liberty Street shop most Ann Arbor lists still send you to.

Chocolate made from the bean, in Washtenaw County

Mindo Chocolate Makers, 206 N Fourth Ave

Mindo is the one to understand first, partly because its own address trips people up. The shop is on Fourth Avenue in Kerrytown, at 206, a few doors from Encore Records. The factory is somewhere else: 11061 Trinkle Rd in Dexter, which is where the bars actually get made and why the gift box copy says “handcrafted in Dexter, Michigan.” If a list tells you to go to Dexter to buy Mindo chocolate, it is describing the production building.

The cacao is single-origin Nacional from the Pichincha highlands of Ecuador, and the company lists a third address alongside the Kerrytown shop and the Dexter factory: El Quetzal de Mindo, in Mindo, Ecuador. That is an unusual amount of vertical integration for a county this size.

What is in stock today and what it costs. Single 50g bars are $15 across most of the line: Pure 67%, Pure 77%, Pure 87%, Pure 100%, Michigan Cherry 77%, Michigan Blueberry 67%, Sea Salt 67%, Salt and Pepper 67%, Panela 77%, Dark Oat Milk 70%, and all five 70% Rustic bars – Pure, Cinnamon, Ginger, Vanilla and Hot Pepper. The milk bars run $20, including the Apricot Cardamom 52% that took an International Chocolate Award in 2022. Tasting tile cubes are $10, individual tiles $4, so you can assemble something small without guessing.

The gift boxes, which is what you are here for: the Classics Collection three-bar bundle at $45, the “Chocolate Lover’s” Edition at $58 (Apricot Cardamom bar, 77% Pure bar, a Rustic tasting cube, vanilla biscotti, 233g total), “Local Favorites” at $75 (Coffee Toffee, Sea Salt 67%, Pure 77%, Pure Rustic and a Cherry Vanilla Sidekick), the Rustic Collection five-bar box at $80, and the Aficionado box at $228 if someone has been very good. The Cozy Edition “Care Package” at $95.50 is the one with drinking chocolate and a gluten-free brownie in it.

For a maker rather than a receiver: the Truffle Making Kit is $55 and includes 8oz of 67% baking chunks, 6oz of cocoa powder, a truffle gift box and a recipe sheet, enough for 30 to 40 truffles.

Five things are sold out as of today, so do not plan around them: the Pumpkin Spice Dark Bark 67%, the Panela Corn Flakes Bark 47%, the Passionfruit and Raspberry Bark, the 72% Salted Maple and Pecan bar, and the “Coco the Ghost” bar.

Prices, stock and addresses: first-party, mindochocolate.com, read 1 Nov 2026. Mindo publishes no hours grid on its own site. The listing records 8am to 7pm daily and Google agrees, which is a wide window for a Kerrytown shop, so phone (734) 660-5636 before a long drive.

Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory, 3723 Plaza Drive

Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory is a separate business from the Bakehouse down the road, and it has a retail store that a surprising number of locals have never walked into. It is inside the Zingerman’s Coffee Company building in the Southside cluster off Plaza Drive, “just steps away from our production facility,” which is their phrase for why a bar can be handed to you still warm from packing.

What makes it a gift stop rather than a candy counter: alongside their own handmade candy bars, nut brittles, marshmallows, sweet spiced peanuts, sesame halvah and peppermint bark, the store carries what its own FAQ calls “a carefully curated selection of 100+ craft chocolate bars” made by other people, plus marzipan, pate de fruit, toffee, licorice, hard candies, lollipops, gummies, caramels and nougats. There is a provisions shelf too, roasted nuts and pretzels and jerky. Staff will build a custom gift box with you at the counter. Pre-order online for in-store pickup if you would rather not browse.

Their own chocolate comes from Conexion Chocolate in Ecuador, which is the detail that ties this stop to the first one on the list: Mindo works with Nacional beans from the Pichincha highlands of the same country. Two Washtenaw County chocolate shops, one country of origin, and neither of them advertises the overlap.

Open 7am to 4pm, daily, which is the detail to plan around: it shuts at four, including Saturday and Sunday. Phone (734) 619-6666.

Five standing discounts, from their own FAQ: 10% off if you attended a BAKE! class at the Bakehouse, 15% on your birthday with ID, 10% for University of Michigan alumni with ID, 10% military with ID, and a 10% case discount. They do not run tours or classes, and say plainly that the kitchen is too small for it, though public tastings are planned.

Hours, stock, discounts and the Ecuador sourcing: first-party, zingermanscandy.com, read 1 Nov 2026. On the suite number, Zingerman’s disagrees with itself. The candy store’s own page says Suite 3, three times. The Zingerman’s Community of Businesses register says Suite 5, and gives Suite 5 for Zingerman’s Coffee as well, which is the building the candy store sits inside. Google carries Suite 5. We publish the street address without a suite, because it is one building and the Coffee Company entrance is the instruction that gets you to the counter.

Harvest Chocolate, Tecumseh, worth the drive

Harvest Chocolate is at 110 W Chicago Blvd in downtown Tecumseh, about thirty-five minutes south of Ann Arbor, and it is a bean-to-bar maker with a chocolate bar you can sit at. It belongs in an Ann Arbor guide for the same reason the tree farms down US-23 do: plenty of this audience drives that road anyway.

The seasonal bars are all $10 and the holiday line is already on the shelf. Spiced Gingerbread is the obvious December one, dark chocolate with ginger, cinnamon and clove and pieces of candied ginger through it. Vanilla Bean Sugar Cookie, Cherry Almond, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Salted Maple and Cinnamon Custard are also $10 each, and all in stock today.

The rest of the shelf, priced. The Snacking Chocolate Gift Bundle is $46 for the Snack Flight, five 2oz bags covering their Ecuador, Uganda, Dominican Republic, India and Oat Milk chocolates, or $80 for the Snack Stash with the same five in 6oz bags. Chocolate tea boxes are $12 each, or $84 for all seven varieties; the looseleaf tins are $16, or $112 for the set. Stovetop hot chocolate is $18 for the 8oz bag and $45 for the 20oz tin. Chocolate hazelnut butter is $15, cocoa powder $16 in dutched or natural, roasted nibs $18, chocolate trail mix $8 for 3oz. A Jack O’ Lantern lollipop is $4 if you want a stocking item.

If you want the drive to be the gift: the bean-to-bar tasting is $30 a head and runs Saturday 14 November at 3pm and Sunday 15 November at 3pm, both with places open today. It covers fermentation, roasting, cracking, winnowing and grinding, with a flight from the seasonal line at the end.

Open Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday noon to 4pm. Closed Monday to Wednesday, so four days a week.

Hours, prices, stock and tasting dates: first-party, harvestcraftchocolate.com, read 1 Nov 2026.

Bonbons and boxes

Bon Bon Bon, 5 Nickels Arcade

Bon Bon Bon is the Detroit chocolatier’s Ann Arbor shop, open in the Nickels Arcade since November 2021, in the covered run between State Street and Maynard with the mosaic floor. Park opposite the Maynard entrance.

The structure is simple and it is why this is the easiest gift on the list to get right: you pick a flavor, you pick a box size, the price scales. Single bons are $3.50. Boxes run $21 for six, $42 for twelve, $63 for eighteen, $84 for twenty-four and $126 for thirty-six, and every flavor is available at every size. Bour-Bon Bon Bon, Coffee and Donuts, Crème Brûlée, Cherry Lux, Better Butter Crunch, Salty Sap, Swimming Turtle, Hazel-What, S’mores: all the same ladder.

Seasonal singles today include Cider and Donuts and Scorpio, both $3.50. Bark Bark Bark is $9 in Mint Basil or Pepper-mint, with Earl Grey sold out. The Pizza Box is $90 and is exactly what it sounds like. Custom gift wrap is $3, and a small bouquet is $50.

Four of the big bundles are sold out today, including the $189 One of (Almost) Everything and the $120 Bon-thusiast, so if a bundle is the plan, order early. The Party Bundle at $150 is still available.

Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm, Sunday noon to 6pm. Phone (313) 316-1430 ext. 3. In-store pickup is offered, usually filled within 24 hours. Their bons are also stocked at both Argus Farm Stop locations in town if you are already there.

Hours, prices, stock and the pickup window: first-party, bonbonbon.com/pages/visit and the bonbonbon.com product feed, both read 1 Nov 2026.

Le Bon Macaron, 209 S Fourth Ave

Le Bon Macaron is a block from Mindo on the other side of Fourth Avenue, which makes the two of them a single errand. Family business, three Michigan stores (Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Holland), running since 2010, with around 30 of their 100-plus flavors rotating through the case on a given day.

The in-store gift box is a clear box, and the prices are published: five macarons $14.75, ten $28.50, fifteen $42.25, twenty-five $69.75. You choose from whatever is in the case that day.

If it has to travel, the ship-anywhere box is $43.75 to $129.25 depending on count. The Macaron of the Month Club runs $82.50 to $330 by term length, which is the gift for the person who already owns everything. They also sell Sloane tea: the Signature Caddy is $28, a large Heavenly Cream is $68, or $88 with the storage tin.

Towers for a party go through orders@lebonmacaron.com rather than the website. Afternoon tea is by reservation, a pot of Sloane, a scone, cheese and macarons, which is a gift you give as an outing.

Google records 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm Sunday; the shop’s own site says only “open daily,” so treat the close as approximate on a December evening. Phone (734) 997-5501.

Prices: first-party, lebonmacaron.com/giftboxes and lebonmacaron.com/shop, read 1 Nov 2026. Hours: Google Places, read the same day, because the site does not publish a grid.

Cherry Republic, 223 S Main St

Cherry Republic is a Traverse City company rather than an Ann Arbor maker, and it is on the list for one specific job: the gift that has to read as Michigan to somebody out of state.

Chocolate-covered cherries are the move. Dark chocolate is $8.95 for the 3oz bag or $25.95 for 14oz, with the 7oz sold out today. Milk chocolate is $8.95 for 3oz and $15.95 for 7oz, the Imperial version $15.95 and $25.95, and the Amaretto 12oz is $20.95. Sweetly Salted Caramel Cherries, dark or milk, are $22.95. Dark chocolate cherry turtles are $21.95, the milk and dark mix $8.95, chocolate cherry truffles $13.95, the Empire Dark and Republic Milk bars $8.95 each, and a cherry cocoa bomb is $6.95. Milk Chocolate Cherry Toffee is $11.95 for 4oz.

Their gift boxes climb steeply: Michigan State and University of Michigan bundles at $70, Sweet and Spicy at $75, Cherries and Berries at $85, Snowed in Snacker at $95, Holiday Spectacular at $115, Fill the Bowls at $125, the Full Board charcuterie box at $145, Crowd Pleaser at $195. The $95 and $115 boxes are the two that stand on their own without a second gift alongside.

10am to 7pm Sunday through Thursday, 10am to 8pm Friday and Saturday. Phone (734) 585-5231.

Prices and stock: first-party, cherryrepublic.com product feed, read 1 Nov 2026. Hours: Google Places, read the same day.

Bakery counters that box things up

Zingerman’s Bakehouse, 3711 Plaza Drive

Zingerman’s Bakehouse is open 7am to 7pm daily, which among gift stops this season is close to a luxury, and it is a ninety-second walk from the candy store above. Phone (734) 761-2095.

The holiday items that box well are the Pfeffernüsse Cookie Box, the Black Magic Brownie Bite Box, the Gingerbread Coffee Cake and the Gift Cake. One honest flag: the Fancy Schmancy Holiday Cookie Tin, the blue and silver snowflake tin with pignoli, pfeffernüsse and fudgy chocolate coin cookies that every December roundup names, is marked on their own product page today as “This item is on Vacation. Returns next holiday season!” Worth re-checking rather than driving out for it.

The thing nobody reprints is their bake clock, which they publish by the hour. Bagels, cakes and pastries land at 7am. Challah and French baguettes at 9am. Jewish rye at 11am. City baguettes and Rustic Italian at 12:30pm. Cinnamon raisin and Detroit St. Sourdough at 2pm. Ciabatta, Paesano, pecan raisin and the sea salt and rosemary focaccia at 5pm. If a warm loaf is going in the gift bag, that is the timetable to work from.

The Bakehouse publishes no prices online at all, for anything. That is unusual on this list and it means the only way to know what a box costs is the counter or the phone. Their holiday hours page, as of today, says “No holiday hours to report,” so the 7am to 7pm grid is all there is until they post one.

Hours, address, bake schedule and product status: first-party, zingermansbakehouse.com, read 1 Nov 2026.

Dom Bakeries, 1305 Washtenaw Ave, Ypsilanti

Dom Bakeries has a drive-thru and nearly 2,700 Google reviews at 4.8, and it is the Ypsilanti answer to “I need two dozen of something good by nine in the morning.” Donuts, pastries, cakes, coffee.

The hours are the part to get right, and their own site states them plainly: open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday 6am to 7pm, Sunday 6am to 5pm, closed Tuesdays. A Tuesday closure catches people out every year. Phone (734) 485-3175.

Hours: first-party, dombakeriesypsi.com, read 1 Nov 2026. Dom publishes no price list online.

Zou Zou’s, 101 Main St, Chelsea

Zou Zou’s is the Chelsea corner cafe, and it is here because a tin of its baked goods plus a walk around Chelsea is a December afternoon rather than an errand. Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm, Saturday 8am to 7pm, Sunday 8am to 3pm. Phone (734) 433-4226.

Hours: first-party, zouzouscafe.com/location/zou-zous-cafe, read 1 Nov 2026.

Two more counters, by town

Dexter Bakery at 8101 Main St is closed Mondays, open 6am to 4pm Tuesday through Thursday, 5am to 4pm Friday and Saturday, 6am to 3pm Sunday. A 5am Friday open is a real thing and it is theirs. Phone (734) 426-3848.

Benny’s Bakery at 111 W Michigan Ave in Saline is closed Sunday and Monday, open 5:30am to 2pm Tuesday through Friday, and 5:30am to noon on Saturday. Phone (734) 429-9120. Saturday morning is a short window; get there before eleven.

Hours for both: Google Places, read 1 Nov 2026. Neither shop publishes an hours grid on its own site, so these are the least certain times on this page.

If you would rather make the gift

Baker’s Nook, 901 W Michigan Ave Suite A, Saline

Baker’s Nook is a bakery with a second life as the county’s cake and candy decorating supply shop, and for a homemade sweet gift it is the whole answer in one stop.

The boxes, priced today and all before tax: a Christmas Tree candy box for a quarter pound is $0.89, a Christmas Stocking tote box for a half pound $0.99, a grease-resistant cookie gift box with a window and holly $1.99, a Merry Christmas rectangle fudge box $1.99, a green tree candy box with a clear lid $2.29, Noel sliding treat boxes $4.99, a Chinese-box cookie set of five $4.99, a green tree plastic cookie container $4.99, the Christmas Cookie Sampler Box in red $5.29, Red and Green treat boxes $5.29, and the Blue Snowflake cookie box $5.99. Twenty-eight products in that category alone.

The chocolate to fill them: Merckens milk coating is $6.69 a pound and Peters white coating is $4.99 a pound. They also stock Christmas chocolate molds, cookie cutters, gingerbread house kits and accessories, and a Hanukkah decorating section.

Open Tuesday to Saturday 7am to 3pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Phone (734) 429-1320.

Prices and categories: first-party, shopbakersnook.com, read 1 Nov 2026; all prices shown excluding tax on their site. Hours: Google Places, read the same day.

107 E Liberty St, and what is actually there

Almost every “chocolate in Ann Arbor” page written in the last decade sends you to Kilwins at 107 E Liberty St. Do not plan a December errand around that address. Here is the full picture, because no other page sets it out.

Kilwins has gone from that address. Google’s record for it is marked permanently closed. And Kilwins’ own website, which publishes a separate page for each of its 196 locations and includes Petoskey, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Holland, Saugatuck, Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Plymouth and Northville, has no Ann Arbor page anywhere in its location sitemap. We checked all 196, including the five whose addresses are not in the page name.

A chocolate shop is promised there, and has not opened. The Belgian chocolatier Quix lists “Coming soon: Ann Arbor Store, 107 E. Liberty St.” on its own front page, with store hours given as “TBD.” Quix traces to Chocoladehuis Quix, founded in Lanklaar, Belgium in 1949, and is now US-owned by David Oglaza. Treat the promise cautiously: the hours are still unset, the site’s own copyright line reads 2023, and Google holds no Ann Arbor record for Quix at all. So as of today there is no chocolate counter on that block of Liberty, whatever the older lists and the “coming soon” notice together imply.

If Quix specifically is the gift, it trades in two places you can actually walk into. The Ferndale flagship is 221 W Troy St, Suite 200, open 1pm to 7pm Sunday and Monday and 10am to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, phone (248) 455-6504. There is also a DTW airport store in the Evans terminal across from Jolly Pumpkin, open 8am to 8pm daily, which is a genuinely useful thing to know if you have landed without a gift.

If a Kilwins caramel apple is specifically the gift, the two nearest are 298 S Main St in Plymouth, 10am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and to 10pm Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday; and 191 Cady Center in Northville, 11am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and to 10pm Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday. Both are closed Sundays, which is the trap.

Kilwins: Google Places record and all 196 pages of the kilwins.com location sitemap, read 1 Nov 2026. Quix addresses, hours, history and the “coming soon” notice: first-party, quixchocolate.com, read 1 Nov 2026; Ferndale hours cross-checked against Google Places the same day. We did not reach a representative of either company. If the Liberty Street shop opens, we will correct this.

How to spend an hour on this

If you have one errand in you, do Fourth Avenue: Mindo at 206 and Le Bon Macaron at 209, two minutes apart, one bean-to-bar box and one macaron box, done. If you want one stop and a wider choice, the Southside cluster on Plaza Drive puts the candy store and the Bakehouse a ninety-second walk apart, but remember the candy store shuts at four. If the gift needs to feel like a trip, Harvest Chocolate in Tecumseh on a Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

Prices here will move, and stock already has. For the rest of the season, the Ann Arbor holiday gift guide covers the non-edible shops with the same price-checking, and the holiday markets guide has the dates when several of these makers share a room.
