On Main Street the day beats the hour.
That is the thing to get right before you plan anything downtown, and it is the opposite of how guides to this district are usually written. The hours are not the problem. Main Street keeps a kitchen median of 10pm on a weeknight and 11pm at the weekend, and that number barely moves. What moves is the number of doors that bother to open at all, and it swings by a factor of ten across the week.
On a Thursday, five storefronts in the whole district are dark all day. On a Monday it is forty-three. On a Sunday it is fifty-two.
We pulled the published weekly schedule for every business inside the district on 2 November 2026. The sweep covered Main Street from William up to Ann, plus Liberty, Washington and Huron west of Division, plus Ashley, First, Fourth Ave and Fifth Ave. 213 distinct places, 166 of them consumer storefronts publishing a schedule: 91 food and drink, 75 retail and services.
The short version: come Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Come Sunday and a third of the district is shut. And if you are still out at one in the morning, you are on First Street, whether you planned to be or not.
The week, in doors
Here is the arithmetic the rest of this guide follows from. Each cell is how many of the 166 storefronts are open at that hour on that day.
| Hour | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10am | 52 | 57 | 57 | 59 | 60 | 57 | 36 |
| Noon | 94 | 108 | 113 | 113 | 117 | 112 | 87 |
| 5pm | 96 | 112 | 124 | 126 | 128 | 120 | 88 |
| 7pm | 71 | 81 | 89 | 92 | 98 | 96 | 65 |
| 9pm | 48 | 52 | 55 | 61 | 75 | 76 | 41 |
| 10pm | 22 | 24 | 26 | 33 | 58 | 59 | 21 |
| Midnight | 7 | 9 | 10 | 14 | 21 | 21 | 7 |
| 1am | 5 | 6 | 7 | 10 | 17 | 17 | 5 |
And the count that actually ruins trips, the doors that never open at all that day:
| Day | Dark all day | Food | Retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 43 | 22 | 21 |
| Tuesday | 23 | 13 | 10 |
| Wednesday | 11 | 7 | 4 |
| Thursday | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| Friday | 7 | 0 | 7 |
| Saturday | 16 | 2 | 14 |
| Sunday | 52 | 20 | 32 |
Friday is the only day of the week on which not one food or drink business in the district is closed. Thursday is the day with the most doors open at five in the afternoon, 126 of 166, which is the single highest number anywhere in the grid with the shop layer still running.
The Monday list
Twenty-two kitchens and twenty-one shops take Monday off, and the list is not the one you would guess. It is weighted heavily toward the rooms people plan around.
The Earle at 121 W Washington St, the cellar restaurant that has been downtown’s special-occasion room since 1975, is closed Monday. So is Blue Nile at 221 E Washington St. So is Amadeus at 122 E Washington St, the Polish dining room, which also takes Sunday. So is Blue LLama at 314 S Main St, which takes Tuesday as well.
The Earle: Tue-Thu 5-8:30pm, Fri-Sat 5-9:30pm, Sun 5-8pm, closed Mon. Read that closing time carefully. First-party, theearle.com, states “Tuesday – Thursday Open at 5:00 PM – Last seating at 8:00 PM” and “Friday & Saturday Open at 5:00 PM – Last seating at 9:00 PM”, so the Google close time is a last seating plus half an hour, not a door. Arrive by 8pm Tuesday through Thursday or you are not getting a table. Phone (734) 994-0211.
Blue Nile: Tue-Wed 5-9:30pm, Thu 5-10pm, Fri-Sat 4-10:30pm, Sun 3-9pm, closed Mon. First-party, bluenileannarbor.com, publishes this in its page schema and runs thirty minutes later than Places on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We have used the restaurant’s own numbers. Phone (734) 998-4746.
Amadeus: Tue-Thu 5-9pm, Fri-Sat 5-10pm, closed Mon and Sun. Cited to Places; amadeusrestaurant.com did not answer our server. Phone (734) 665-8767. Blue LLama: Wed-Thu 5:30-10pm, Fri-Sat 5:30-10:30pm, Sun 5-9pm, closed Mon and Tue. Cited to Places; bluellamaclub.com publishes a show calendar rather than door hours. Phone (734) 372-3200. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Brunch is worse. Afternoon Delight at 251 E Liberty St, the breakfast room most locals name first, is closed Monday and shuts at 3pm every other day of the week.
Afternoon Delight: Tue-Sat 8am-3pm, Sun 8:30am-3pm, closed Mon. Cited to Places; afternoondelightcafe.com renders no readable hours block. Phone (734) 665-7513. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Spencer at 113 E Liberty St loses two days, not one: closed Monday and Tuesday, open noon to 9pm Wednesday through Sunday and noon to 8pm on the Wednesday. Its own site confirms both closures.
Spencer: Wed 12-8pm, Thu-Sun 12-9pm, closed Mon and Tue. First-party, spencerannarbor.com, lists “Monday closed” and “Tuesday closed” explicitly. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Thirteen of the Monday closures sit on Main Street itself, and most of them are shops rather than kitchens. Schlanderer & Sons at 208 S Main St, the jeweller trading on that block since 1919, is closed Monday and Sunday and runs 9:30am to 5:30pm the other five days, the earliest closing time of any retailer in the district. Ginza Marketplace at 319 S Main St loses Monday and Tuesday. Abracadabra Jewelry at 205 E Liberty St and Dear Golden at 211 S 4th Ave both take Monday, and Dear Golden takes Tuesday too.
Schlanderer & Sons: Tue-Sat 9:30am-5:30pm, closed Mon and Sun. Cited to Places; schlandererandsonsjewelry.com returned a server error. Phone (734) 662-0306. Ginza Marketplace: Wed-Thu 11am-8pm, Fri-Sat 11am-9pm, Sun 11am-7pm, closed Mon and Tue. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 369-3232. Dear Golden: Wed-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 12-6pm, closed Mon and Tue. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 369-3010. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
The Sunday problem is a shopping problem
Sunday takes out fifty-two doors, and unlike Monday the damage is concentrated on one side of the district. Thirty-two of the fifty-two are retail and services.
Put it in a single number. At 7pm on a Sunday, eight of the district’s seventy-five retail doors are open. On a Friday at the same hour it is twenty-four, on a Thursday twenty-two. The shop layer does not shorten its Sunday, it mostly cancels it.
The kitchens that go with it are specific and worth knowing, because several are the ones you would otherwise walk to. Jerusalem Garden at 314 E Liberty St is closed Sunday, full stop, and its own site says so in the same breath as its hours. Vinology at 110 S Main St is closed Sunday. So is Peridot at 118 W Liberty St, so is Sottini’s Sub Shop at 205 S 4th Ave, and so is Earthen Jar at 311 S 5th Ave, which takes Monday as well.
Jerusalem Garden: Mon-Sat 11am-8:30pm, closed Sun. First-party, jerusalemgarden.net: “Mon-Sat: 11 AM – 8:30 PM Closed on Sunday”. Vinology: Mon-Thu 4-10pm, Fri-Sat 4-11pm, closed Sun. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 222-9841. Peridot: Mon-Wed 5-10pm, Thu 5-11pm, Fri-Sat 5pm-12am, closed Sun. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 773-3097. Sottini’s: Mon-Fri 11am-6pm, Sat 11:30am-6pm, closed Sun. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 769-7827. Earthen Jar: Tue-Sat 12-7pm, closed Mon and Sun. First-party, earthenjar.com: “Tues – Sat 12pm – 7pm”. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Le Dog at 306 S Main St is the extreme case in the whole district and deserves its own sentence: 11:30am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday, closed both weekend days. A fifteen-hour trading week on the district’s main retail block.
Le Dog = La Soup: Mon-Fri 11:30am-2:30pm, closed Sat and Sun. Cited to Places. Phone (734) 327-0091. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
The ninety that never take a day off
Set against all of that, ninety of the 166 storefronts are open all seven days, 57 kitchens and 33 shops. If you want a plan that cannot go wrong whatever day you have, it is built out of these.
Sweetwaters at 123 W Washington St keeps the widest window in the district by a distance: 6am to 11pm, seven days, identical. Seventeen hours, every day of the year, is not a schedule anything else downtown attempts.
Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea: daily 6am-11pm. Cited to Places; the chain’s own location page for this address returns a 404. Phone (734) 769-2331. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Hyperion Coffee at 111 W Liberty St is the flat 7am to 6pm option, confirmed day by day on its own site with no variation at all across the week. Argus Farm Stop on Liberty, at 325 W Liberty St, runs 8am to 8pm seven days, which makes it the only place in the district where you can buy groceries, a coffee and a pastry at both ends of a long day.
Hyperion Coffee: daily 7am-6pm. First-party, hyperioncoffee.com, all seven days listed at “7am to 6pm”. Argus Farm Stop Liberty: daily 8am-8pm. Cited to Places; argusfarmstop.com is script-rendered and publishes no readable hours block. Phone (734) 213-2200. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
The seven-day kitchens worth planning around: Frita Batidos at 117 W Washington St, 11am to 11pm and to midnight Friday and Saturday, the most reviewed business in the district by a wide margin. Grizzly Peak at 120 W Washington St, 11:30am to 10pm and to 11pm Friday and Saturday. Café Zola at 112 W Washington St, 8am to 10pm every day and to 11pm at the weekend, which is the longest single stretch of any full-service kitchen here. Shalimar at 307 S Main St, which runs a split service all week: lunch 11:30am to 2:45pm, dinner 5pm to 9:30pm, 10:30pm Friday and Saturday. Old Town Tavern at 122 W Liberty St, 11am to 11pm, identical seven days. TAQ at 120 E Liberty St, noon to 10pm, identical seven days.

And the shops. Vault of Midnight at 219 S Main St is the comic shop, 11am to 8pm and to 10pm Friday and Saturday, confirmed line by line on its own site. Literati at 124 E Washington St runs 10am to 8pm Monday through Thursday, to 9pm Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 7pm Sunday, also first-party. Cherry Republic at 223 S Main St is 10am to 7pm Sunday through Thursday and to 8pm Friday and Saturday, in the shop’s own words. Rock Paper Scissors at 216 S Main St holds 10am to 9pm six days and 10am to 6pm Sunday, which is the longest weekday retail window on Main Street itself.

Before ten in the morning, the district is coffee and two diners
Twenty-two doors open at or before 8am on a weekday. Twenty of them are food. At 10am on a Sunday only thirty-six storefronts in the whole district are open, which is the lowest figure on the grid outside the small hours.
Fleetwood Diner at 300 S Ashley St is the one everybody names, and its timetable needs a paragraph rather than a line. Google lists it as open 24 hours, all seven days. Its own ordering site says something more precise: “Monday – Sunday 8:45am – 10:45pm. Open 24 hours for Walk-Ins.” So the 24-hour claim is about the counter and the stools, and the 8:45am to 10:45pm window is when the kitchen takes an order you place from a phone. Turning up at 3am is a real thing you can do at Fleetwood. Expecting delivery at 3am is not.
Fleetwood Diner: walk-in 24 hours daily per Places and the venue’s own site; order-ahead 8:45am-10:45pm daily per orderfleetwooddiner.com. Phone (734) 995-5502. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Café Zola opens at 8am seven days and is the only sit-down breakfast in the district that then stays open until 10pm. Cannelle at 110 E Washington St opens at 7:30am seven days, and is the one bakery here that holds a 10pm close on Friday and Saturday. Bakehouse 46 at 116 E Liberty St is 8am to 9pm six days and to 7pm Sunday. Cupsnchai at 214 S 4th Ave and RoosRoast at 117 E Liberty St both open at 7:30am, and RoosRoast is the early closer of the pair at 2:30pm on weekdays.

After midnight you are on First Street
This is the finding that surprised us most, and it is the one no other guide to this district reports.
Seventeen doors in the Main Street district are open at 1am after a Friday night. Three of them are on Main Street. Six are on a single block of South First Street, two of those sharing one street number.
208 S First St holds both The Blind Pig and the 8 Ball Saloon in the basement beneath it, both 5pm to 2am on weeknights and from 3pm Saturday and Sunday. 210 S First St holds The Circ Bar, Uplift and Rabbit Hole. LIVE is at 102 S First St. That is one short block carrying more than a third of the district’s late capacity.
The Blind Pig and 8 Ball Saloon: Mon-Fri 5pm-2am, Sat-Sun 3pm-2am, same phone (734) 996-8555 for both. Cited to Places; blindpigmusic.com publishes a show calendar rather than door hours. The Circ Bar: Tue-Sat 6pm-2am, closed Mon and Sun. Phone (734) 216-7497. Uplift: Wed-Sat 5pm-2am, Sun 5pm-12am, closed Mon and Tue. Phone (734) 249-3124. Rabbit Hole: Thu 8pm-1am, Fri 6pm-2am, Sat 8pm-2am, closed Sun-Wed. LIVE: Fri-Sat 9pm-2am only, closed the other five days. All cited to Places. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
The rest of the late layer is scattered and mostly off Main: Alley Bar at 112 W Liberty St, 7pm to 2am and from 5pm Friday and Saturday. Babs’ Underground at 213 S Ashley St, 7pm to 2am, identical all seven days, which makes it the only door in the district you can count on at 1am on a Tuesday. The Last Word at 301 W Huron St, to 2am Friday and Saturday and closed Sunday. Mash Bar at 211 E Washington St, which opens two nights a week and only two: Friday and Saturday, 8pm to 2am. The Ranch Honky Tonk at 122 W Washington St, to 2am Thursday through Saturday.

On Main Street itself the late options are Conor O’Neill’s at 318 S Main St, Regents Field at 204 S Main St, and the DownBar beneath the Pretzel Bell at 226 S Main St. The DownBar is the one to know about, because the Pretzel Bell’s published hours stop at 11pm Friday and Saturday while its own site advertises DJs and dancing downstairs until 2am. Two different rooms, one address, two different closing times.
Conor O’Neill’s: Tue-Thu 3-11pm, Fri 11:30am-2am, Sat 8am-2am, Sun 9am-11pm, Mon 3-8pm. Note one conflict: conoroneills.com lists Monday as 12pm-8pm where Places says 3pm-8pm. We have printed the later opening because the failure mode is a wasted half hour rather than a locked door. Phone (734) 665-2968. Pretzel Bell: Mon-Thu 4-9pm, Fri 4-11pm, Sat 10am-11pm, Sun 10am-9pm. First-party, thepretzelbell.com footer and page schema, matching Places exactly; the same site separately advertises the DownBar running to 2am Friday and Saturday. Phone (734) 994-2773. For food rather than drink after midnight, Eat Thai at 332 S Main St carries the latest published kitchen hours in the district by two full hours: 11am to 4am Wednesday through Saturday, to 2am Sunday, to 10pm Monday and Tuesday. We could not confirm that from the restaurant. Its domain does not resolve, so there is no first-party schedule to check, and a 4am close is unusual enough that we are flagging it rather than vouching for it. D TOWN EATERY at 325 E Liberty St is the other option, to 3am Thursday through Saturday.
Eat Thai: Mon-Tue 11am-10pm, Wed-Sat 11am-4am, Sun 11am-2am. Cited to Places and unverified; eatthaia2.com returns no DNS record. Ring ahead on (734) 355-3224 before relying on the 4am. D TOWN EATERY: Mon-Wed 11am-11pm, Thu-Sat 11am-3am, closed Sun. Cited to Places. Phone (313) 809-3629. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
The shops that are still open at eight
The retail median closes at 7pm Monday through Saturday and 6pm Sunday, so anything past eight is an exception. There are eight of them worth the walk, and six are bookshops, a comic shop or a record shop.
Crazy Wisdom at 114 S Main St is the longest of them: 11am to 9pm Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm Monday, Tuesday and Sunday, confirmed day by day on its own site. Rally House at 315 S Main St runs 10am to 9pm six days, first-party confirmed. Vault of Midnight and Literati both hold 8pm on a weeknight and go later at the weekend. Underground Sounds at 120 E Washington St is 11am to 9pm Friday and Saturday, in the shop’s own words. The Getup Vintage at 210 S 4th Ave holds noon to 8pm six days.

West Side Book Shop at 113 W Liberty St is the one we would ring first. Its published schedule is 11am to 5pm Monday through Thursday and 11am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, a five-hour jump that is unusual for a used bookshop, and the shop has no website to check it against. Worth a call on (734) 995-1891 before a Friday evening walk.
West Side Book Shop: Mon-Thu 11am-5pm, Fri-Sat 11am-10pm, Sun 12-5pm. Cited to Places; no first-party site exists and the Friday and Saturday close is unconfirmed. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
If you want the shops rather than the kitchens, the usable window is narrower than it looks: noon to 6pm, Wednesday through Saturday. That is the only stretch where both the independents and the chains are reliably unlocked.
Three timetables not to trust in November
Four of the schedules we checked turned out to be wrong, stale or ambiguous in a way a reader would feel. They are worth printing because they are the pattern.
Bill’s Beer Garden, 218 S Ashley St. Google publishes a full seven-day timetable for Bill’s year round, 5:30pm to 10:30pm or 11pm depending on the day. Bill’s own site publishes a calendar by month, and the calendar runs March to October. There is no November entry, no December entry, no winter entry at all, and the only note on the page is “Our hours change with the seasons. We sometimes close for bad weather.” For an outdoor beer garden in Ann Arbor in November, Google’s timetable is the least reliable thing on this page. The site directs closures to the garden’s Instagram, which is the only live source.
Bill’s Beer Garden: Places lists Mon-Wed 5:30-10:30pm, Thu-Sat 5:30-11pm, Sun 5:30-10pm, year round. First-party, billsbeergarden.com, publishes March-April, May-June, July-September and October blocks and nothing after October. Treat the Places hours as not applicable in November and check Instagram. Phone (734) 369-8001. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
Blank Slate Creamery, 300 W Liberty St. Blank Slate publishes two timetables on its own site, a longer summer one and a shorter one closing at 9pm on weeknights, plus a third set in its page data. Places shows the longer version. In November the shorter one is the safer assumption.
Blank Slate Creamery: Places lists Mon-Thu 2-10pm, Fri 2-11pm, Sat 12-11pm, Sun 12-10pm. blankslatecreamery.com also publishes “Mon – Thurs 2 – 9 PM Fri 2 – 10 PM Sat 12-10 PM Sun 12 – 9 PM”. Assume the earlier close in winter. Phone (734) 922-5383. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
State & Liberty, 212 S Main St. The shop’s own Ann Arbor page shows “Mon – Fri: 9 AM to 9 PM EST” and “Sat – Sun: 3 PM to 7 PM EST”. Those are customer service hours for a national brand, not the hours of the door at 212 S Main St, and reading them as store hours would send you there at nine in the morning for nothing. The store hours are 11am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 6pm Sunday.
State & Liberty Ann Arbor: Mon-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 11am-6pm. Cited to Places; the first-party page’s 9am-9pm figures are service hours and have been discarded. Phone (734) 882-0272. Verified 2 Nov 2026.
And The Earle, covered above, where the published close is a last seating. If a restaurant’s Google card says 8:30pm and its own site says last seating 8pm, the card is telling you when the staff leave.
If you have one day
Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening. The grid is unambiguous: 126 doors open at 5pm, five closures in the whole district, and the shop layer still running alongside the kitchens.
Start between noon and five, because that is when both halves of the district are awake. Do Main Street itself for the shops, then Liberty and Washington for the kitchens, which is where the density actually is. Eat at seven, when ninety-two doors are still open. If you are going past ten, walk west to First and Ashley, because that is where the district keeps its late hours.
Avoid Sunday if the point of the trip is shopping, and avoid Monday if the point is dinner somewhere specific. For a Monday, Kerrytown is the better walk, and if you want the restaurants ranked by how late they serve rather than by what day they open, that is the downtown Ann Arbor restaurants guide. For the campus side of Division Street, the State Street guide runs on a different clock entirely.
How these hours were checked
Every schedule here was pulled on 2 November 2026 and every number comes from that pull.
The method: a Google Places text sweep of the district rectangle across 65 business-type queries, which returned 213 distinct places. Cash machines, parking structures, bank back offices, hotel front desks, construction and advisory offices and one mural were excluded, leaving 166 consumer storefronts with a published weekly schedule. The library, the post office and the YMCA are real doors but are not retail or food, so they are left out of the arithmetic rather than dragged through the medians. Food and drink were separated from retail and services using Google’s own primary-type field rather than our judgement, so the split is reproducible.
Venue websites were then checked against that grid wherever they were reachable. Sixteen matched exactly and are marked first-party above. Seven conflicted, were seasonal, or were internally inconsistent, and each of those is named in the text with the conflict spelled out rather than quietly resolved. One, Eat Thai, has no reachable site at all and is labelled unverified. Where no first-party schedule was readable, the hours are cited to Places and the phone number is printed, because a reader who can ring the shop does not need to trust us.
Hours change. If you find one of these wrong, the business’s own number is in the paragraph above it.
